Responsibilities
- Identify the patient comparing information on requisition to patient identification before venipuncture
- Explain sample collection procedure to patient/parents before collecting sample
- Perform venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently
- Know which color top tube to use and volume of blood needed
- Perform bleeding time tests, blood cultures, blood sample collection
- Maintain cleanliness and decorum of blood collection rooms
- Stock laboratory consumables/supplies inventory
- Ensure all trays and tools are clean and sanitized
- Perform clerical duties such as filing, aiding technologists, and collecting data
- Complete reports for hazardous incidents and consult with supervisor
- Deal with complications from improperly drawn blood, patient allergies, or other conditions
- Receive samples, attend calls and queries, prepare send outs, and follow up on referral lab results
Qualifications
- Training in phlebotomy or related field
- Experience in venipuncture and micro collection techniques
- Knowledge of proper tube selection and blood volume requirements
- Ability to handle complications from blood draws
