Position Summary

Key Responsibilitiespre-Operative Responsibilities

• Prepare the operating theatre for scheduled surgical procedures.
• Verify surgical schedules, patient details, consent forms, and procedure requirements.
• Ensure all surgical instruments, equipment, implants, and consumables are available and functioning properly.
• Perform surgical instrument counts and prepare sterile instrument trays.
• Assist in patient positioning and preparation in accordance with surgical and safety protocols.
• Participate in the Surgical Safety Checklist (WHO Time-Out Protocol).

Intra-Operative Responsibilities

• Maintain strict aseptic and sterile techniques throughout surgical procedures.
• Scrub, gown, and glove according to established theatre protocols.
• Anticipate surgeons' requirements and provide instruments, supplies, and equipment efficiently during procedures.
• Maintain an organized sterile field and ensure sterility is not compromised.
• Monitor the integrity and availability of surgical instruments and supplies throughout procedures.
• Perform instrument, sponge, and needle counts before, during, and after surgery in accordance with policy.
• Assist the surgical team during emergency situations and unexpected complications.
• Communicate effectively with the circulating nurse and surgical team to ensure smooth workflow.

Post-Operative Responsibilities

• Ensure accurate final counts of instruments, needles, and surgical materials.
• Assist in specimen handling, labeling, and documentation.
• Prepare instruments and equipment for decontamination and sterilization.
• Ensure proper disposal of clinical waste and sharps.
• Assist in preparing the theatre for subsequent procedures.

Infection Control & Patient Safety

• Adhere to infection prevention and control standards, policies, and procedures.
• Maintain compliance with sterilization and aseptic techniques.
• Identify and report any breaches in sterile practice or patient safety concerns.
• Ensure safe handling and storage of surgical instruments and medical equipment.
• Participate in quality assurance and risk management activities.

Documentation & Compliance

• Complete perioperative nursing documentation accurately and promptly.
• Maintain records related to instrument counts, implants, specimens, and surgical procedures.
• Ensure compliance with DHA/MOHAP regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies.
• Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.

Equipment & Inventory Management

• Monitor and maintain OT equipment and surgical instruments.
• Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate maintenance when required.
• Assist in inventory control and stock management of theatre supplies and consumables.
• Ensure availability of sterile instruments and surgical packs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
• Valid Registered Nurse DHA license.
• DHA Registered Nurse License or Eligibility.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (mandatory).
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
• Specialized training or certification in Perioperative Nursing is an advantage.

Experience

• Minimum 3-5 years of experience as an OT Scrub Nurse in a hospital, day surgery centre, or surgical facility.
• Experience assisting in Vascular Surgery, General Surgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Gynecology, etc.
• Experience handling surgical instruments, sterilization procedures, and operating theatre protocols.
