Mechanical Design Engineer (m/f/d)

Role Overview

Key Responsibilities

• Translate whiteboard discussions, sketches, and written specifications into robust mechanical designs.
• Collaborate with researchers and technical leaders to develop production-ready engineering solutions.
• Create detailed engineering drawings, models, and technical documentation.
• Balance performance, cost, and production efficiency in manufacturable designs.
• Work with manufacturing partners, machine shops, and production facilities on fabrication.
• Support prototypes using 3D printing and other rapid manufacturing techniques.
• Assemble, test, and refine prototypes and mechanical systems.
• Contribute improvements throughout product development and participate in design reviews.
• Provide technical input on manufacturability, materials, and production methods.

Required Skills and Experience

• Strong practical experience in mechanical design, drafting, or mechanical engineering.
• Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks; other CAD experience may be considered with rapid transition capability.
• Ability to turn conceptual discussions and requirements into detailed engineering designs.
• Strong understanding of machining, moulding, and additive manufacturing.
• Experience designing components in metals and plastics.
• Familiarity with prototyping techniques, particularly 3D printing.
• Basic FEA experience or ability to perform engineering hand calculations.
• Ability to work with external manufacturers, fabricators, and machine shops.
• Hands-on workshop experience with engineering hand tools and machine tools.
• Strong problem-solving abilities and a practical engineering mindset.

Preferred Experience

• Knowledge of ceramics, moulding technologies, or advanced manufacturing processes is preferred.
• Experience with moving mechanical assemblies, sealing systems, and pressure-containing components is preferred.
• Experience with products operating at pressures up to 125 bar is preferred.
• Exposure to structural frame design and mechanical support structures is preferred.
• Sheet metal design experience is beneficial but not essential.
