Role overview
The Mate is head of the deck department and commands vessel operations during the Master’s absence.
The role assigns deck-department responsibilities and monitors safe and efficient work performance.
The position is fully on-site at 7700 Hopcott Road in Delta.
Vessel and crew operations
- Assist the Master with safe vessel operation and maintain crew performance, training, and teamwork.
- Maintain a proper bridge navigation watch.
- Monitor cargo operations and lead crew as required.
- Supervise crew work hours, work-rest logs, and efficient use of company resources.
Safety and compliance
- Ensure onboard compliance with the company Safety Management System.
- Conduct safety inspections, safety meetings, emergency drills, and hazard identification.
- Conduct initial investigations of incidents, near misses, environmental events, and reported hazards.
- Act as First Aid Officer and maintain a valid First Aid certificate.
