Role overview

The Developer Environments team builds and operates fast, stable environments for feature creation, testing, debugging, development, and CI.

The Engineering Manager leads the end-to-end inner-loop experience and partners with CI/CD, infrastructure, security, and product engineering teams.

Leadership and strategy

  • Define the vision for Developer Environments and inner-loop developer productivity.
  • Set technical strategy and connect it to critical business-impacting projects.
  • Lead and mentor engineers while building a culture of ownership, collaboration, and technical excellence.
  • Align team priorities with broader product, platform, and reliability goals.

Systems and operations

  • Own the design, scalability, reliability, and usability of ephemeral development environments.
  • Improve provisioning, stability, teardown workflows, startup time, success rate, performance, debuggability, and resource utilization.
  • Implement monitoring, alerting, incident response processes, and operational playbooks.
  • Integrate environments with CI/CD and test workflows.

Collaboration and enablement

  • Improve engineering productivity through tooling, automation, self-service, and adoption of best practices.
  • Set and improve code review and design standards through writing and knowledge sharing.

Required qualifications

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience and 2+ years of engineering management or equivalent people leadership experience.
  • Experience leading teams in infrastructure, platform engineering, developer productivity, or adjacent domains.
  • Strong backend or infrastructure systems background with architecture and execution leadership capability.
  • Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, containers, and CI/CD systems.
  • Experience operating reliable services with monitoring, on-call, incident response, postmortems, and continuous hardening.
  • Equivalent practical experience or a bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with ephemeral or remote development environments, orchestration optimization, test automation, build engineering, or developer tooling.
  • Familiarity with Terraform, Helm, or similar infrastructure tooling.

Compensation

  • Canadian base pay is CAD 181,000 to CAD 241,000 per year.
  • The total compensation package may include equity, monthly spending stipends, and benefits.

Workplace

  • Affirm describes itself as remote-first, with most roles remote within the country of employment.
  • Some proximal roles may occasionally require work from an assigned office, while a limited number of roles are office-based.
