Role Overview

The role combines fisheries science and operational expertise with leadership, analytical capability, environmental awareness, and practical sustainable fisheries knowledge.

Work Arrangement

  • The listed location is the United Arab Emirates, with a fully remote work arrangement.

Management and Planning

  • Develop and implement fisheries management strategies aligned with sustainability and organizational objectives.
  • Manage commercial, community, research, or conservation-oriented fisheries programs as applicable.
  • Develop annual and seasonal fisheries plans based on stock status, environmental conditions, regulations, and market requirements.
  • Establish catch limits, quotas, effort controls, seasonal restrictions, or other management measures where applicable.

Science and Monitoring

  • Monitor fish stocks, catch levels, fishing effort, biomass, recruitment, and population trends.
  • Coordinate stock assessments, fisheries surveys, sampling programs, and biological monitoring.
  • Analyze catch, effort, mortality, age, size, maturity, recruitment, and distribution data.
  • Evaluate environmental factors affecting fisheries productivity, including temperature, salinity, habitat, weather, and ecosystem changes.

Operations and Compliance

  • Monitor fishing activities, gear, methods, vessel practices, and operational performance for compliance with approved plans and regulations.
  • Coordinate vessel operations, fishing schedules, landing activities, and resource allocation where applicable.
  • Promote responsible fishing practices that minimize bycatch, habitat damage, and unwanted mortality.
  • Maintain catch documentation, landing records, vessel records, licenses, permits, databases, GIS records, maps, and management documentation.

Conservation and Stakeholders

  • Develop bycatch-reduction and habitat-protection measures and support habitat restoration, marine conservation, protected-area, and ecosystem-management initiatives.
  • Coordinate research programs with universities, government agencies, laboratories, consultants, and research institutions.
  • Engage fishing communities, vessel operators, regulators, seafood buyers, conservation groups, and industry associations.
  • Communicate fisheries-management requirements and technical findings clearly to stakeholders and operational teams.

People and Resources

  • Manage fisheries-related budgets, contracts, procurement, consultants, and operational resources.
  • Lead fisheries officers, field teams, observers, researchers, technicians, and contractors.
  • Develop workforce schedules, training programs, field procedures, and performance standards.
  • Manage survey equipment, monitoring systems, vessels, vehicles, sampling tools, and technical assets.

Reporting and Risk

  • Establish monitoring, control, and surveillance procedures and coordinate onboard, dockside, electronic, or remote monitoring programs where applicable.
  • Investigate suspected illegal, unreported, or unregulated fishing activities and coordinate appropriate escalation.
  • Develop emergency procedures for environmental incidents, extreme weather, vessel incidents, mass mortality events, and other fisheries-related risks.
  • Prepare management reports covering stock status, catches, effort, compliance, conservation performance, operations, and emerging risks.

Candidate Profile

  • The successful candidate is expected to have fisheries science and operational expertise.
  • The role requires strong leadership, analytical capability, environmental awareness, and practical knowledge of sustainable fisheries management.
