Deputy Manager – Design & Mechanical Engineering

About the Role

Jindal Projects is looking for an experienced and technically strong Deputy Manager – Design & Mechanical Engineering to lead and coordinate mechanical engineering and design activities for industrial projects. The role will be responsible for developing engineering deliverables, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, reviewing vendor documents, and ensuring that designs comply with project specifications, applicable codes, and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical engineering and design activities from concept and basic engineering through detailed engineering and project execution.
  • Prepare, review, and approve mechanical engineering deliverables, including equipment specifications, datasheets, calculations, drawings, layouts, and material specifications.
  • Develop and review mechanical system designs for industrial/project applications.
  • Review equipment sizing, selection, and technical specifications for pumps, compressors, tanks, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping-related mechanical equipment, and other static/rotating equipment as applicable.
  • Coordinate with Civil, Structural, Electrical, Instrumentation, Process, Piping, and Project teams to ensure effective multidisciplinary integration.
  • Review technical offers, vendor drawings, data sheets, calculations, and documents and provide technical comments/approvals.
  • Participate in technical discussions with clients, consultants, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables are completed within approved project schedules and budgets.
  • Interpret client specifications, tender documents, project requirements, and applicable engineering standards.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards such as ASME, API, IS, ASTM, ISO , and applicable project/client standards.
  • Identify design issues, engineering risks, and interface requirements and coordinate timely resolution.
  • Support procurement by preparing technical specifications, bid evaluation documents, and technical clarifications.
  • Conduct design reviews and provide technical guidance to junior engineers/designers.
  • Support site teams during construction, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Review and resolve site technical queries, deviations, and engineering change requests.
  • Maintain proper engineering documentation, design records, revision control, and technical correspondence.
  • Support project management in technical planning, progress monitoring, and client coordination.
  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with company quality, safety, and HSE requirements .

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and industrial project design.
  • Experience in mechanical equipment design, selection, specification, and technical evaluation.
  • Knowledge of static and rotating equipment.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, equipment layouts, GA drawings, and mechanical specifications.
  • Familiarity with engineering calculations and design verification.
  • Knowledge of applicable national and international mechanical engineering codes and standards.
  • Experience in vendor coordination and document review.
  • Good understanding of project engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning processes.
  • Working knowledge of engineering software and MS Office; exposure to AutoCAD / SolidWorks / Inventor / relevant design tools will be an advantage.
  • Strong multidisciplinary coordination and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Industry Experience

Candidates with experience in EPC, industrial projects, steel plants, power plants, infrastructure, manufacturing plants, process plants, material handling systems, or heavy engineering projects will be preferred.

B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university/institute.

Preferred

M.E./M.Tech or relevant professional certification.

Additional training/certification in project engineering or engineering design.

Experience

7–12 years of relevant experience in mechanical design/engineering, preferably in EPC or industrial project environments.

Demonstrated experience handling engineering deliverables and coordinating with clients, consultants, vendors, and site/project teams.

Accuracy and quality of mechanical designs and documentation.

Compliance with project specifications and applicable codes.

Effective resolution of technical issues and site queries.

Reporting

Reports To: Manager / Senior Manager – Engineering / Project Head

Direct Reports: Mechanical Engineers / Design Engineers / Designers, as applicable.

The ideal candidate should be a technically competent mechanical engineer with strong project exposure, analytical ability, attention to detail, and the capability to independently manage mechanical engineering activities while coordinating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
