Summary
- This position supports the expedition as the expert and specialist in past and/or present human culture for particular regions and itineraries.
- The position works with Field Staff to deliver the program and guest experience daily.
- The Newfoundland focused Cultural Specialist supports voyages with expertise specifically in Newfoundland.
Essential Duties
- Lead or assist with operations such as hiking, inflatable boat tours, kayak, stand up paddleboard, snorkel, cross country ski, snowshoe, coach tours, cultural/culinary/historical tours.
- Offer relevant and engaging in the field and on board interpretation to guests throughout the voyage.
- Participate in evening recaps to highlight guests' daily experiences.
- Prepare several PowerPoint presentations of 30 40 minutes to highlight voyage themes.
- Respond to on board and in the field requests in a timely manner and remain highly visible to guests.
- Mitigate guest concerns and complaints and bring them to Expedition Leader or Assistant Expedition Leader.
- Accompany guests ashore with local guides and monitor quality control.
- Eat meals with guests and make an effort to dine with a variety of people.
- Participate in on board duties such as monitoring wildlife, cleaning gear, delivering communications, creating educational materials, assisting with photo collection, luggage movement, and hospitality suite support.
- Participate in physically demanding settings including operating inflatable boats, hiking over uneven terrain, managing snorkel activities, and leading kayak excursions.
Eligibility for Contract
- CPR & First Aid Certified (higher level preferred).
- Bachelor's degree or four years of work experience in related industry.
- Full mobility of all limbs and ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- In depth knowledge of destination and previous experience guiding or working in destination.
- Team player with excellent training skills and proven educator.
- Works well independently and is a self starter.
- Strong communicator, even tempered, remains calm under pressure.
- Must handle multiple tasks with keen attention to detail.
- Comfort with public speaking.
- Excellent problem solving skills and good judgment.
- Strongly preferred: Experience driving vessels with outboard engines; Merchant Mariner Credential of 25 tons or greater, RYA certificate, or equivalent; Experienced and adaptable in diverse geographic regions.
- Extensive past and present human cultural knowledge of destination.
Required For Contract
- Promotion/Sales: Familiarity with company philosophy and National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions programs.
- Conservation/Sustainability: Familiarity with conservation and sustainability programs.
- Inflatable Boat Operations: Preparedness to assist with inflatable boat operations; familiarity with Zodiacs and ability to drive strongly preferred.
- Safety: Participation in on board safety training, meetings, drills including abandon ship and fire drills.
Compensation
- Daily rate: $330/daily.
- Travel expenses paid.
