Core System Engineer

Edinburgh (Hybrid) In this position, you’ll be based in the Edinburgh office for a minimum of three days a week, with the flexibility to work from home for some of your working week.

A role you will love As a Core System Engineer, you'll work closely with engineers, business analysts, and other technology professionals to support and enhance core business systems.

You'll be encouraged to develop your technical knowledge through a combination of structured learning, practical experience, and ongoing mentorship.

Regular performance reviews and development discussions will help identify opportunities for growth and career progression.

• Learn and develop proficiency in the COBOL programming language through structured training and on-the-job experience, including working with COBOL applications running on Linux systems.
• Assist in the maintenance, enhancement, and support of business-critical core systems built predominantly in COBOL.
• Collaborate with engineers and business analysts to understand requirements and deliver effective solutions.
• Write, test, troubleshoot, and debug code to support high-quality software delivery.
• Develop an understanding of modern software engineering practices, including the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), source control, automated testing, code reviews, and CI/CD processes.
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to continuous improvement activities.
• Document code, processes, and technical procedures as required.

Other skills/experience required for the role:

• Graduate in a relevant degree (e.g., Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, Engineering), or an ability to demonstrate strong logical problem-solving skills and aptitude for programming.
• Willingness and enthusiasm to learn COBOL and develop software engineering skills.
• A methodical approach to problem-solving.

Desirable skills:

• Exposure to programming, scripting, databases, or software development concepts.
• Familiarity with version control systems or collaborative development practices.
• An interest in Linux environments and enterprise applications.
