About the role
National Highways is seeking an Assistant Project Manager for its Operations Directorate in the North West.
The role supports management and delivery of a portfolio of regional projects.
The role oversees project teams, external contractors, and consultants.
The role supports governance, quality assurance, health and safety, and technical standards across the supply chain.
Workplace
- The role is based across the North West at one of the Manchester, Warrington, Preston, or Penrith offices.
Project delivery
- Support complex projects and manage allocated projects across all stages from design to introduction into service.
- Review delivery performance, resolve issues, and prepare project business cases.
- Develop collaborative relationships with project managers, stakeholders, suppliers, contractors, and internal teams.
- Comply with the Operations Quality Management System on projects.
Controls and safety
- Support programme management, reporting, and risk management against project budgets.
- Ensure financial and contractual practices are implemented and followed.
- Consider health and safety needs throughout planning and delivery of service activities.
- Help ensure projects meet quality, cost, time, customer service, technical, and specialist safety requirements.
About you
- Recognised qualification in a relevant engineering discipline or significant civil engineering project delivery experience.
- Understanding of project management practices and controls.
- Experience reviewing project plans and detailed stage plans with delivery partners.
- Experience managing relationships with multiple stakeholders.
- Understanding of contract management under NEC contracts.

Compensation
- External candidates will be offered a starting salary at the lower end of the pay scale.
- Current employees will be appointed in accordance with the established pay policy.
