Position Overview
The Veterinary Assistant supports the Veterinarian in maintaining the health, welfare, and productivity of sheep on a farm.
The role includes animal handling, vaccination, medication, disease prevention, treatment support, health monitoring, and animal health records.
The position reports to the Farm Manager and works under the direction of a Veterinarian.
Workplace and Schedule
- The role is based at a sheep farm in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, UAE.
- The position is full-time and requires in-person work in a farm environment.
- The role may require work on weekends and public holidays.
Veterinary and Animal Care
- Assist with daily sheep examinations, treatments, routine veterinary procedures, and emergency cases.
- Safely catch, restrain, move, and handle sheep during examinations and procedures.
- Monitor animals for illness, injury, abnormal behavior, poor appetite, lameness, respiratory problems, and diarrhea.
- Report sick, injured, or abnormal animals to the Veterinarian.
- Assist with vaccination, deworming, prescribed medication, wound cleaning, dressing, first aid, and post-treatment care.
- Collect blood, fecal, swab, and other samples when required.
Lambing and Health Programs
- Assist with lambing and provide care to newborn lambs under veterinary supervision.
- Monitor pregnant and recently delivered ewes and report complications.
- Assist with identification and isolation of sick or potentially infectious animals.
- Support disease prevention, biosecurity, quarantine, farm hygiene, and flock health programs.
- Support regular sheep health checks, weighing, tagging, and identification activities.
Equipment, Records, and Farm Support
- Clean and disinfect veterinary equipment, treatment areas, pens, and other work areas.
- Handle and maintain veterinary equipment, medicines, vaccines, and supplies.
- Check stock and report shortages or expired veterinary medicines and consumables.
- Maintain accurate records of vaccinations, treatments, medications, observations, mortality, and animal health.
- Assist with routine sheep husbandry and maintain the veterinary store and treatment area.
Safety and Welfare
- Ensure proper handling and welfare of sheep at all times.
- Follow farm safety, animal welfare, hygiene, and biosecurity procedures.
- Perform other animal health and farm operation duties assigned by the Veterinarian or Farm Manager.
Qualifications and Experience
- Training, a certificate, or a diploma in Veterinary Assistance, Animal Health, Animal Husbandry, Livestock Management, or a related field is preferred.
- One to two years of experience in a sheep, goat, livestock farm, veterinary clinic, or similar animal-care environment.
- Hands-on sheep and goat experience is highly preferred.
- Basic knowledge of sheep diseases, vaccination, deworming, medication, and animal husbandry.
- Safe sheep handling experience is advantageous.
Work Capabilities
- Ability to work under the direct supervision of a Veterinarian.
- Physically fit and able to work outdoors and handle livestock.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and follow veterinary instructions.
- Basic English communication skills are preferred; Arabic or Hindi/Urdu is advantageous.
- Willingness to work in farm conditions, including weekends and public holidays when required.
Pay
- Pay is AED 2,500 to AED 3,500 per month.
