Start your career in public works. Learn skills that serve the community. The Town of Smithfield is seeking a dependable Utilities & Grounds Helper I to support the Public Works team. This entry-level opportunity provides hands-on experience in water and sewer maintenance, grounds care, building maintenance, equipment operation, and the daily work that keeps Town properties safe and functional. THE OPPORTUNITY • Assist with and learn duties performed by Utilities Maintenance Technicians and Mechanics. • Gain hands-on experience while supporting essential services and maintaining Town properties. WHAT YOU WILL DO • Assist with repairing water and sewer pipes, installing water meters, cleaning and maintaining sewer pump stations, and responding to system malfunctions. • Read and record meter and equipment readings used for utility billing and system operations. • Perform building, grounds, storm-drain, flower-bed, trash, tree, sidewalk, and debris maintenance. • Operate hand and power tools, mowers, chainsaws, blowers, tractors, and other equipment used in assigned work. • Drive Town vehicles, direct traffic around work sites, perform V-DOT flagging activities, and plow or shovel snow. • Report equipment, material, and supply problems and help maintain tools and equipment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • High school diploma or equivalent. • One (1) to two (2) years of related water and sewer line repair and maintenance experience and/or training preferred. • Valid driver’s license. • Pesticide Spraying Certification and Registered Technician Certification, or ability to obtain them within six months of employment. • Ability to pass a background check, physical, and drug screening. • Proven dependability and excellent customer service skills. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR We are looking for someone who is dependable, safety-minded, willing to learn, and able to work as part of a team. The position involves physical work, outdoor conditions, lifting up to 50 pounds, operating tools and equipment, climbing, bending, kneeling, crawling, and plowing or shoveling snow.
