Role overview
WSP is seeking a junior or intermediate Transportation Planner, Engineer, or Data Scientist for its Canada transportation planning practice.
The team develops travel demand models and data-driven insights to support multimodal transportation planning and policy projects.
Work may combine macro-, meso-, and microscopic modeling, data science, transportation planning, and software development.
Core responsibilities
- Compile and analyze transportation data.
- Undertake transportation studies and complex traffic operations studies, including capacity analysis using modeling tools.
- Conduct traffic impact studies, signal and intersection improvement evaluations, traffic management plan evaluations, and safety reviews.
- Prepare technical reports and collaborate with team members, planners, engineers, agencies, and government partners.
- Support transportation master plans, secondary plans, environmental assessments, policy studies, and other planning projects.
- Develop bespoke software solutions, analysis tools, applications, or macros for complex transportation data.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, urban planning, computer science, economics, or a related discipline, and/or 1–3 years of equivalent work experience.
- Demonstrable computer programming experience, preferably with Python and/or R.
- Strong background in statistics and data analysis.
- Strong oral communication and technical writing skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently and within a team.
- Knowledge of travel demand model design and application, including activity-based models and platforms.
Technical skills
- Proficiency with travel demand modeling software such as EMME, VISUM, TransCAD, or Cube.
- Experience with meso- or microscopic traffic simulation tools such as Aimsun, VISSIM, Viswalk, DYNAMEQ, Synchro, Sidra, or HCS.
- Experience with GIS, statistical model estimation and calibration, and machine learning models.
- Experience with front-end data visualization using HTML, CSS, and common web libraries or frameworks.
Additional microsimulation qualifications
Post-secondary education in civil engineering or transportation engineering from an accredited university.
Experience in traffic engineering, travel demand forecasting, traffic operations analysis, and safety analysis.
Ability to prepare and present complex technical reports, research, and analysis.
Programming with VBA, Python, C#, or similar tools would be an asset.
