Role Overview

What You’ll Do

• Drive technical strategy for significant engineering domains or cross-team initiatives.
• Translate ambiguous problems into clear technical direction and achievable delivery approaches.
• Shape architectures for long-term product and business needs.
• Evaluate technical trade-offs and communicate evidence-based recommendations.
• Create architectural patterns, engineering standards, and sensible defaults.
• Mitigate risks related to reliability, scalability, security, maintainability, and operational complexity.
• Align dependencies and technical decisions across teams.
• Partner with Product, Engineering, Operations, and other stakeholders.
• Unblock teams through difficult technical or organisational challenges.
• Mentor senior engineers and lead cross-team working groups.
• Improve testing, observability, code quality, incident response, and operational readiness.
• Contribute directly to critical systems when hands-on involvement is effective.

What We’re Looking For

• Extensive experience designing, building, and operating complex backend or distributed systems; 10+ years is provided as a guide.
• Experience leading significant technical initiatives involving multiple teams or systems.
• Strong architectural judgment and understanding of software design and engineering fundamentals.
• Experience with microservices, APIs, event-driven architectures, relational databases, and data modelling.
• Experience operating software in cloud environments, preferably AWS.
• Understanding of containerisation, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, observability, and modern operational practices.
• Strong approach to automated testing and production reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
• Ability to communicate complex technical topics to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience coaching and mentoring experienced engineers.
• Professional fluency in English.

Technology Context

• The primary backend technology is Java, with migration toward Java 21.
• Experience in payments, fintech, or another high-throughput or regulated environment is useful but not essential.
