Role overview

What you will do

• Drive technical strategy for significant engineering domains or cross-team initiatives and translate ambiguous problems into achievable delivery approaches.
• Shape architectures, evaluate trade-offs, establish engineering standards, and align technical decisions across teams.
• Identify risks across reliability, scalability, security, maintainability, and operational complexity.
• Partner with Product, Engineering, Operations, and other stakeholders to inform roadmaps and delivery decisions.
• Unblock teams, mentor senior engineers, lead working groups, and improve testing, observability, code quality, incident response, and operational readiness.
• Contribute hands-on to critical systems when appropriate.

What we are looking for

• Extensive experience designing, building, and operating complex backend or distributed systems, with multiple projects and approximately 10 or more years as a guide.
• Leadership of significant technical initiatives involving multiple teams or systems and ability to establish direction without formal authority.
• Strong architectural judgment, software design knowledge, and ability to balance delivery with long-term sustainability.
• Experience with microservices, APIs, event-driven architectures, relational databases, data modelling, and system performance.
• Cloud experience, preferably AWS, plus knowledge of containerisation, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, observability, and modern operations.
• Strong automated testing practices, production reliability experience, and ability to explain complex topics to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Professional fluency in English is required.

Technical context

• Java is Paymentology's primary backend technology and the platform is moving toward Java 21; deep Java experience is valuable but transferable expertise is recognized.
• Payments, fintech, or another high-throughput or regulated environment would be useful but is not essential.
