Position Overview
Develop foundational embedded software infrastructure for next-generation surgical robotic systems.
Join the Embedded Networking Software team within the Multiport Platform Software group.
Serve as a technical leader for the dV5 robotic embedded network and future surgical robotic systems.
Role and Responsibilities
- Own architecture and multi-year technical direction across the embedded network’s seven OSI layers.
- Design features for reliability, redundancy, fault tolerance, low-latency switching, traffic shaping, and queue management.
- Develop DDS-style publish/subscribe messaging and Layer 5 session APIs for seamless disconnect and reconnect.
- Set standards for Layer 2 and Layer 3 software, Ethernet MAC/PHY drivers, and deterministic real-time data paths.
- Lead design reviews, code reviews, mentoring, debugging rigor, and work on high-risk code.
- Lead hardware-software networking escalations using JTAG, GDB, and protocol analyzers.
- Coordinate cross-functional requirements and architectural tradeoffs across engineering, clinical, and manufacturing teams.
- Influence vendor, middleware, build-versus-buy, and technical-debt investment decisions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years, or Master’s degree with 8+ years, in a relevant engineering or computer science discipline.
- Technical leadership experience on complex systems, including architecture ownership, mentoring, and cross-organizational influence.
- Expert knowledge of all seven OSI layers, TCP/IP internals, Ethernet switching fabric design, and C/C++ embedded development.
- High-speed networking software experience, including low-level Ethernet MAC/PHY driver development.
- Experience with Linux or embedded RTOS environments, memory management, concurrency, and interrupt handling.
- Experience leveraging new development tools, such as AI coding assistants, and driving adoption across a team.
Preferred Experience
- Multi-generation technical strategy or platform roadmap experience for a shipping hardware product.
- Hardware-software fluency covering schematics, datasheets, and multiple system abstractions.
- IEEE 802.1 TSN/AVB, high-availability redundancy, or Automotive Ethernet experience.
- Layer 2 switching configuration over SPI or in-band protocols, including VLANs, QoS, and segmentation.
- RTOS and Linux driver development experience, including FreeRTOS, ThreadX, Zephyr, QNX, or VxWorks.
- Exposure to functional safety standards and embedded network security such as secure boot, MACsec, or IPsec.
