Senior Software Engineer, Infrastructure

Responsibilities

• Lead the development of the virtualization subsystem (VMM, CHV) at Google scale.
• Lead the development of specialized tooling to support engineering practices within the virtualization and systems programming space.
• Design and implement automation frameworks for build, CI/CD, and qualification testing specifically tailored for Rust-based VMMs and guest isolation layers.
• Support the delivery of the virtualization layer across millions of production hosts, ensuring compatibility across various product lines and hardware configurations.
• Build out observability framework to provide transparency into VM health and I/O performance, supporting a more data-driven and efficient release process.

Qualifications

• Minimum qualifications: - Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience. - 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., C, C++ or Go). - 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture. - 3 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture. - Experience in systems programming, kernel-level development, and virtualization architectures. - Experience in core infrastructure (e.g., Virtual Machines, Operating Systems, Infrastructure as a Service, Networking, Storage, Security, Hypervisor). Preferred qualifications: - Experience with virtualization. - Experience in algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis and software design, or in Unix/Linux systems, IP networking, performance and application issues. - Experience in production infrastructure, and working in both engineering and operational environments: this team has one foot in each, and the successful individual will be able to bridge that divide. - Knowledge of CI/CD best practices. - Ability to take on challenges that bridge complex stakeholder contexts and take concerted, long-term goal and investment. - Excellent communication skills.
