Senior Software Engineer opportunity on RBC's Ownr team.
Build and evolve a Node and React-based platform that helps Canadian entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses.
The role includes technical leadership, mentoring, and broad influence across the technology stack.
Core responsibilities
- Plan, design, develop, deploy, monitor, and maintain significant portions of software supporting Ownr users.
- Contribute to application functionality, reliability, delivery, and system infrastructure.
- Lead and mentor developers within the team and broader organization.
- Identify technology improvements and make reducing technical debt part of regular development work.
- Take ownership of tasks and drive solutions through unforeseen challenges.
- Understand user challenges and apply empathy to software decisions.
- Provide coaching and guidance to engineers when help is needed.
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers, and non-technical stakeholders.
Current technology stack
- Web client: React and Styled Components.
- Web server: Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Express.
- Database: PostgreSQL.
- Infrastructure: AWS services including RabbitMQ, Redis, and S3.
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions.
- Testing: Jest, React Testing Library, and Cypress.
Must have
- At least 5 years of hands-on programming experience, including substantial JavaScript experience.
- Experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, GraphQL, React, CSS, and PostgreSQL.
- Experience leading development teams, mentoring junior developers, and working with non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience writing automated tests from unit through end-to-end testing.
- Experience with Git or GitHub and modern software delivery practices such as pull requests.
- Experience with DevOps practices and configuring cloud computing infrastructure.
- Experience building production systems and applying deployment, monitoring, and security best practices.
- Experience developing for cloud-agnostic architecture.
Nice to have
- Experience with different development workflows and methodologies.
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in a computer or software design-related program.
- Experience working with AWS.
