CNPC R&D (DIFC) Company Limited is CNPC's R&D and technical support center based in the Dubai International Financial Centre.

The organization supports CNPC upstream assets across the Middle East, including the UAE, Iraq, and Oman, through field-driven R&D and technical collaboration.

Role Purpose

The Senior Principal Geologist will serve as a carbonate development subject-matter expert within the technical department.

The role connects static geological understanding with dynamic field performance to support geological modeling, field development planning, well placement, and reservoir management.

Static Modeling and Concepts

  • Lead high-quality 3D static geological models for complex carbonate reservoirs, including structural framework, matrix properties, fracture characterization, and uncertainty quantification.
  • Develop conceptual reservoir models covering depositional architecture, diagenetic overprint, and fracture networks.
  • Translate geological concepts and diagenetic models into model properties with traceability from data to output.

Field Development and Well Support

  • Provide geological input to field development planning, including well targeting, trajectory optimization, compartmentalization analysis, and recovery factor assessment.
  • Support well planning and operations through geological interpretation while drilling, geosteering decisions, and real-time model updates.
  • Lead appraisal and development activities for complex naturally fractured carbonate reservoirs throughout project life cycles.

Cross-Discipline Integration

  • Drive integration across geophysics, petrophysics, and reservoir engineering to build consistent subsurface descriptions.
  • Promote best practices in data gathering, quality control, risk and uncertainty management, and static-dynamic model coupling.
  • Facilitate alignment among operational teams, Beijing-based research institutes, and external partners.

Regional and Strategic Studies

  • Oversee regional geological evaluations and basin modeling to de-risk exploration opportunities and identify bypassed pay and upside potential.
  • Provide strategic geological advice on portfolio positioning, long-term asset maturation, and new venture evaluations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • PhD degree in geoscience or a closely related discipline.
  • At least 15 years of E&P geoscience industry experience, primarily focused on carbonate reservoir development and static modeling.
  • Proven appraisal and development experience with complex carbonate fields, including naturally fractured reservoirs.
  • Deep expertise in carbonate sedimentology, diagenesis, and sequence stratigraphy.
  • Hands-on experience with Petrel, SKUA, or RMS static modeling platforms.
  • Fluent English proficiency at C1 level or above.

Leadership and Additional Experience

  • Technical leadership on 3 to 5 major carbonate field development projects with demonstrable impact on FDP outcomes.
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed journals or recognized industry conferences such as SPE, AAPG, or EAGE.
  • Experience mentoring junior to mid-level geoscientists and leading technical working groups.
  • Experience with unconventional reservoirs is a plus.
  • Familiarity with dynamic data integration, Python or R, Middle East or North Africa carbonate provinces, and Microsoft Office is included in the source qualifications.
