About this opportunity

Ericsson is seeking a Senior Patent Agent / Senior Patent Attorney to join our Intellectual Property Rights team at the forefront of 5G/6G, cloud, AI, and advanced communications. Primary location is Ottawa, ON; candidates based in Montreal, QC will also be considered. In this role, you will leverage AI-enabled tools and established workflows, collaborate with global inventors, researchers, and university partners, and contribute to prosecution, portfolio strategy, licensing, and litigation across a portfolio of more than 60,000 patents.

This is a hybrid position requiring a minimum of three days per week in the office.

What you will do

  • As a Patent Agent / Patent Attorney at Ericsson, you will work at the intersection of intellectual property and advanced communications technology. You will evaluate, draft, and prosecute patent applications using AI-powered tools and established workflows, prepare claim charts, and manage cases and portfolios. You will collaborate with global inventors, researchers, and university partners while helping maintain and grow Ericsson’s portfolio of more than 60,000 patents. This role also supports licensing and litigation activities and offers the opportunity to build deep IP expertise in a fast-moving technical environment.

The skills you bring

  • To succeed in this Senior Patent Agent / Senior Patent Attorney role, you will have a university degree in telecommunications, electrical engineering, computer science, physics, or another relevant discipline. Registration to practice before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) and/or the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is required. Registration as a USPTO patent attorney is a strong asset.
  • You bring expertise in at least one of the following areas: Radio Access Network (RAN), security, Core network, 3GPP, software, AI, or cloud, preferably with telecom experience. You also communicate clearly and can explain complex concepts in simple terms.
  • You learn new technologies, tools, and processes quickly and are open to new ways of working. You are resilient, adaptable, and motivated to achieve ambitious goals, whether drafting applications or preparing claim charts. You demonstrate professionalism through collaboration, teamwork, and timely delivery, and you are receptive to feedback with strong attention to detail.
  • The ideal candidate is eager to learn, intellectually curious, and motivated by challenging work. Early-career professionals are encouraged to apply. A collaborative mindset and commitment to collective success are essential. Experience with portfolio management, claim chart preparation, or support for licensing or litigation activities is highly valued.

Short-Term Variable Compensation Plan

  • Your pay also includes the opportunity for an annual bonus. Actual bonus payouts are based on performance of the business against the unit’s objectives, individual performance, and the individual bonus target. Certain eligibility and pro-ration rules apply.

  • Your Financial Security We invest in both your short and long-term financial wellbeing. Ericsson’s Group Retirement & Savings Program offers an automatic 2% company contribution into the Pension Plan. Ericsson also offers a 50% match of employee’s contribution into the Registered Retirement Savings Plan, up to 8% of the employee’s contribution (maximum of 4% match). This leads to a total company contribution potential of 6%. Employees will also basic life insurance and basic accidental death and dismemberment coverage at two-times annual base pay at no cost, as well as short-term disability coverage. Employees also have the option to participate in Ericsson’s Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Your Time Your work-life balance is important to us. New employees are provided a minimum of 18 days of accrued vacation, at least 3personal days, minimum 10 holidays, 1 volunteer day, and sick days. Please note paid time off is pro-rated based on the employee’s start date. Furthermore, Ericsson provides up to 10 weeks of paid maternity leave and 6 weeks of parental or adoption leave at 100% of pay.
