Job Description

  • The Directed Energy Research Center (DERC) at the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) is looking for a Senior Laser–Matter Interaction Researcher who will conduct laboratory and field based applied laser–matter interaction (LMI) research and development activities for different laser based applic
  • The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the LMI Team Leader and be responsible for performing research and development activities on laser matter interactions and applications.
  • The candidate will contribute to the design, development, integration, and operation of advanced laser systems and experimental platforms supporting indoor and outdoor activities.
  • The position may require occasional short term international travel to meet project and organizational requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Independently design, plan, and execute laser matter interaction activities in both continuous wave (CW) and pulsed regimes.
  • Design, integrate, and build experimental setups using various laser sources and detection systems for LMI research and development activities.
  • Design and develop mobile pulsed laser platforms, including containerized systems incorporating high energy lasers operating in different regimes.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, characterize, and repair laser systems, including ultrafast and nanosecond laser sources.
  • Conduct experiments in both indoor and outdoor environments, as required by projects’ objectives.
  • Develop, organize, and maintain LMI laboratory infrastructure and facilities, and provide technical support to team members across multiple projects.
  • Develop laser remote sensing systems for both indoor and outdoor trials.
  • Process and report experimental results through technical documentation and project reports.
  • Work collaboratively with project teams and departmental stakeholders.
  • Interact with scientific collaborators, suppliers, and equipment manufacturers.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary technical projects.
  • Mentor junior researchers, engineers, and students engaged in laser matter interaction research and development activities.

Requirements

  • Strong hands on experience with high power laser systems, optics, and detectors.
  • Extensive practical experience with laser systems operating across multiple pulse regimes.
  • Demonstrated experience in operation, maintenance, alignment, and troubleshooting of high energy pulsed laser systems.
  • Strong expertise in spectrometry, thermography, calorimetry, and thermal analysis, including instrument operation, experimental design, and data interpretation in scientific and industrial contexts.
  • Proven experience in ultrafast laser spectroscopy including pump probe measurements, laser based spectroscopy and sensing, such as LIBS, LIF, Raman, etc.
  • Extensive experience in developing complex experimental setups, including optical system design, signal processing, and instrumentation, for controlled LMI experiments.
  • Familiarity with opto mechanical design, vibration isolation, and laser beam stability optimization.
  • Proficiency in modeling, simulation, and programming tools such as LabVIEW, Python, SOLIDWORKS, and Zemax to support experimental design and data analysis.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within a multicultural research and development environment, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Extensive experience in instrument automation, programming, and hardware/software interfacing.
  • Hands on experience with high vacuum systems, including operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and gas handling equipment.
  • Experience with spectroscopy and imaging based detection systems.

Qualifications

  • A PhD degree in Laser Technology, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field, with a focus on laser–matter interaction research and development.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in an R&D, industrial, or equivalent technical environment.
  • A good command of English, both written and spoken.
