THE OPPORTUNITY
Vir Biotechnology is seeking a Senior Infrastructure & IT Security Engineer (Temp Staff) to join our IT team. This is a senior, hands-on individual contributor role that combines IT infrastructure engineering and security operations. In this role, you will help maintain, secure, troubleshoot, and continuously improve the technology that enables Vir Bio's business and scientific mission, spanning endpoints, identity platforms, cloud services, servers, networking, virtualization, and security tools.
The successful candidate is an execution-focused technology professional who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, takes ownership from problem identification through resolution, and balances security, reliability, and user experience. You are a collaborative partner who can navigate ambiguity, communicate clearly, document thoroughly, and identify opportunities to strengthen systems, automate processes, and improve operational excellence.
This role is located in our San Francisco headquarters with an expectation of 4 days per week in office.
Infrastructure Engineering & Operations
Implement, maintain, and enhance infrastructure across cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments
Administer and support Windows, macOS, Windows Server, and Linux environments, including patching, monitoring, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management
Support AWS infrastructure, enterprise networking, virtualization platforms, and remote access technologies
Manage identity, access management, endpoint technologies, and core infrastructure services
Troubleshoot complex issues spanning endpoints, applications, cloud services, networks, and third-party systems
Develop automation and scripting solutions to improve efficiency, consistency, and operational visibility
Execute infrastructure changes in accordance with established security, architecture, and change management standards
Maintain technical documentation, runbooks, implementation procedures, and recovery plans
IT Security Operations
Monitor, investigate, and respond to security events, alerts, vulnerabilities, and incidents across the technology environment
Support endpoint protection, identity security, privileged access, vulnerability management, logging, and other security technologies
Partner with stakeholders to identify, assess, and remediate security risks and configuration gaps
Support identity and access platforms, including Microsoft Entra ID, Active Directory, and Okta
Participate in incident response activities, including investigation, containment, remediation, recovery, and documentation
Assist with audit, compliance, and security review activities by collecting technical evidence and validating controls
Contribute to the continuous improvement of security monitoring, processes, documentation, and operational procedures
Help strengthen Vir's security posture by identifying opportunities to improve controls, visibility, and response capabilities
Across both areas, you will serve as a senior technical resource, partnering closely with IT, Security, business stakeholders, managed service providers, and vendors to resolve complex issues, implement technical solutions, and drive operational excellence through clear communication, documentation, and continuous improvement.
WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU BRING
Extensive hands-on experience in infrastructure engineering, systems administration, cybersecurity, or a related enterprise IT role
Strong experience supporting and securing Windows, macOS, Windows Server, and Linux environments
Experience with cloud technologies, preferably AWS, along with enterprise networking, identity and access management, and endpoint management solutions
Hands-on experience investigating security events, responding to incidents, and remediating vulnerabilities and operational risks
Experience supporting enterprise security technologies, including endpoint protection, privileged access, firewalls, and remote access solutions
Strong scripting and automation skills using PowerShell, Python, or similar technologies
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex issues across multiple systems and stakeholders
Strong communication and documentation skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical risks and solutions to both technical and non-technical audiences
Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and drive issues through resolution
Experience in a regulated industry (biotechnology, pharmaceutical, healthcare, or similar), familiarity with security frameworks such as NIST or CIS Controls, and relevant cloud, infrastructure, networking, or security certifications are preferred
