Key Responsibilities

  • To efficiently manage all commercial aspects of the Operational Unit and maintain regular liaison with all stakeholders.
  • Resource management in line with the overall requirements and staffing structure/ utilisation.
  • Build a high performing team (manage the development of personal plans, establishment of objectives/targets for all direct reports and monitor on an ongoing basis).
  • Implement and attend the monthly project reviews to interrogate the business unit performance and take appropriate action.
  • Attend the required reviews with the Executive Team to explain the business current and planned performance.
  • Ensure compliance with year end audit requirements.
  • Ensure the Operating Unit achieves the annual Commercial Objectives & Targets.
  • Ensure the implementation of a commercial strategy for the operating unit including tenders.
  • Maintain a schedule of Client engagement events for equivalent level customer feedback, alignment and future pipeline of work.
  • In conjunction with the Operations Director, set the annual business plan, and create the strategy to achieve the elements therein.
  • Suggest Group wide business initiatives and implement local improvements.
  • Become the “face of murphy” for external engagement at industry events.
  • Instil a one murphy culture and remove silos within the business.
  • Active management of the work winning process, allocation of resource to commercial elements and liaison with the pre-contract commercial resource.
  • To ensure that the Commercial Practitioners administer the contracts correctly in a timely and professional manner.
  • Identify, mitigate and manage risk & opportunities for the Operating Unit.
  • To lead on the development and training of Commercial Practitioners including supervisor / mentor / counsellor role for staff undertaking their APC or equivalent.
  • To ensure a culture of contractual & commercial awareness exists within their operational unit.
  • To be responsible, where required, to ensure that a review of all of the contractual obligations and commercial risks is carried out prior to the submission of tenders.
  • Maximising of cash position, including WIP control, cash flow production & improvement plans for all projects.
  • Identification of correct insurance policy for the business, liaison with the Insurance department.
  • Ensuring a culture of margin improvement exists from tender to final account.
  • To ensure the Operating Unit adheres to group procedures and governance.
  • To be responsible in conjunction with the Operational Director and Estimating Manager to ensure that a review of all of the contractual obligations and commercial risks is carried out prior to the submission of all tenders within the BU and attend tender settlement meetings as required.
  • To ensure effective negotiations with prospective clients are carried out prior to signing contracts to minimise the business’s exposure to risk.
  • To share all appropriate information within the Group where different Regions, BU’s, etc. are carrying out projects for the same Client to enable a “Group” approach/relationship with regular Clients.
  • Participate in preparation, development and implementation of Group Commercial Procedures.
  • Participate in development of Joint Venture Agreements and arrangements where appropriate.
  • To carry out commercial audits on other BU’s as and when required.
  • Functional leadership, bringing best practice into the business, involvement in Business Improvement Initiatives.
  • Ability to handle Client disputes, including appointment of legal advice.
  • Lead Team Meetings on a regular scheduled basis.
  • Participate in, and positively promote, the Murphy Culture Development Culture (leading to Zero Harm)
  • Manage the performance of all staff assigned to you in accordance with legislation and company procedures.
  • Undertake any reasonable duties expected of you.
  • Attend and engage fully in any learning and development activities that are deemed appropriate
  • Carry out all work in accordance with health and safety and any other legal requirements.
  • Participate in team/business meetings as necessary.
  • Participate and engage fully in company appraisal/performance review processes and constantly work to improve your individual, your team and the wider group’s performance.

Who we are looking for

Commercially astute with substantial proven experience within a commercial role in the Construction Industry.

Expert knowledge of Standard Forms of Contract and Standard Methods of Measurement.

Understanding of programming techniques and project controls.

Leadership Skills.

Computer literate with strong skills in Microsoft Office Applications (Word/Excel/Outlook/PowerPoint)

QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING

  • Degree qualification.
  • Chartered Quantity Surveyor (MRICS) or equivalent (preferred)
  • Full driving license.
