Role Overview
The Second Cook assists the Chef Manager with preparing meals and daily specials for café dining and catering events.
The role supports team training, cost control, customer service, food quality, and kitchen operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare, cook, and serve meals, daily specials, and catered events according to recipe standards.
- Prepare soups, salads, starches, meats, fish, poultry, vegetables, and desserts.
- Use roasting, grilling, steaming, poaching, boiling, and baking methods.
- Follow food safety, PPE, health, and sanitation procedures, including recording time- and temperature-sensitive food items.
- Advise the Sous Chef or Chef Manager on menu planning and costing based on popularity, production cost, and seasonal trends.
- Delegate tasks, coach team members, and support best practices.
- Maintain product quality, customer satisfaction, speed of service, cleanliness, hygiene, and sanitation.
- Control costs through inventory maintenance, FIFO rotation, portion control, seasonal planning, and workstation organization.
- Listen to customers, respond professionally to questions and concerns, and escalate issues when needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
