Role Overview

The Real Property Law Unit seeks an Attorney Intern to support real property tax and tax administration matters under close supervision and direction.

The role reports to the Director of Real Property and supports the Legal Affairs Division of the NYC Department of Finance.

Department and Legal Division

The Department of Finance administers city tax revenue laws and provides services related to tax and revenue matters.

The Legal Affairs Division provides legal advice and services involving real property taxes, exemptions, collections, land records, parking violations, and other agency matters.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research and draft memoranda, legal responses, policy statements, and other documents.
  • Assist with state and local legislation, policies, agency rules, forms, and communications.
  • Provide legal support to operational staff and liaise with the Law Department.
  • Participate in projects and assist with reports.
  • Research and draft responses to claims or actions against the agency.
  • Assist with agency litigation matters and administrative hearing petitions and cases.
  • Support RPIE, SCAR, and other related proceedings as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited United States law school under applicable New York Court of Appeals rules or admission to the New York State Bar.

Preferred Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong research, writing, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Experience with real property tax assessment, exemptions, abatements, or tax maps is a plus.
  • Ability to balance multiple assignments and responsibilities.

Salary

  • The salary range is $72,510-$83,388 per year.

Workplace

  • The position may be eligible for remote work up to two days per week under the applicable Remote Work Pilot Program.
