Principal Software Engineer - Mobile Platform

Role overview

What you will do

• Set architectural decisions about shared and native layers across React Native, iOS, and Android.
• Turn the architecture into production code with performance, reliability, and observability foundations.
• Deliver a React Native product surface into production during the platform rollout.
• Lead Staff and Senior engineers through the migration.
• Scale platform adoption across major Canva product teams.
• Establish trusted patterns and platform primitives for feature teams.

Experience

• Built or significantly evolved a large-scale cross-platform mobile architecture in production.
• Led a meaningful migration of a mature mobile product while it remained live and growing.
• Set technical direction across multiple teams and influenced senior engineers and leaders.
• Shaped architecture or technical standards adopted across multiple groups or a large engineering organisation.
• Remain hands-on with difficult implementation details and apply strong engineering judgement.

Technical knowledge

• Shared-code runtimes, native boundaries, bundle delivery, and performance profiling on real devices.
• Deep iOS and Android fundamentals, including shared abstractions and native boundaries.
• Mobile performance, reliability, crash monitoring, and optimization at scale.
• Shared capabilities, libraries, abstractions, and infrastructure used across engineering teams.
• Data structures, complexity, and system-level trade-offs.

Nice to have

• Deep production experience with React Native and React internals.
• Rust or C/C++ experience for portable mobile libraries.
• Open-source contributions to React Native, Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, Expo, or related ecosystems.
• Mobile CI/CD, release trains, and over-the-air updates at scale.
• Use of AI tooling in real engineering work.
