Principal Engineer - AI

Shaping the technical vision for how AI capabilities are embedded into Medibank's platforms, products and services.

Translating enterprise AI strategy into actionable engineering roadmaps and scalable technical solutions.

Providing technical leadership and architectural guidance across AI-enabled software development initiatives.

Defining and evolving engineering standards, patterns and frameworks that enable teams to build AI solutions consistently and efficiently.

Embedding modern software engineering practices, including CI/CD, automation and secure-by-design delivery approaches.

Partnering with engineering, architecture, security, risk and delivery teams to ensure AI solutions are scalable, secure and well governed.

Driving adoption of AI engineering practices through coaching, enablement and knowledge sharing across squads.

Advising on cloud architecture, model integration, performance optimisation and cost-efficient AI delivery.

Influencing strategic technology decisions across multiple domains while balancing innovation, risk and long-term sustainability.

Mentoring engineers and technical leaders, helping grow AI engineering capability across Medibank.

About You

You're a senior engineering leader with a strong software engineering foundation and a track record of delivering complex technology outcomes in large-scale environments.

You know how to bridge strategy and execution, bringing clarity to ambiguity and helping teams turn emerging technologies into practical business capability.

You'll bring:

Extensive experience in software engineering, engineering leadership or technical architecture roles.

Hands-on experience building and delivering customer-facing digital products and platforms.

Practical experience integrating AI technologies, models and APIs into production software environments.

Strong knowledge of modern engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, cloud-native development and DevOps.

Experience working with cloud platforms and AI services, particularly AWS and related technologies.

Strong understanding of microservices, APIs and modern application architectures.

The ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams and stakeholder groups.

Experience balancing innovation, risk, performance and cost considerations when delivering technology solutions.

Exceptional communication skills with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical audiences.
