About the Role

  • The Music Technician plays a vital technical and operational role within the Performing Arts Department.
  • The post holder ensures smooth technical operation of music classrooms, rehearsal spaces, recording facilities, and performance venues.
  • A key aspect includes responsibility for maintenance and repair of musical instruments.

Technical Support for Curriculum Delivery

  • Prepare and maintain music classrooms, rehearsal rooms, and performance venues.
  • Provide technical support for classroom teaching, including woodwind, brass, strings, keyboards, rock instruments, PA systems, and recording equipment.
  • Support examination coursework requirements (GCSE, A Level, BTEC) including recording, editing, and production.
  • Assist staff and students in effective use of music technology and digital audio workstations.
  • Ensure specialist equipment is prepared and configured to meet lesson objectives.

Performance & Production Support

  • Lead technical setup and operation of sound, lighting, and AV systems for concerts, recitals, assemblies, productions, and whole school events.
  • Provide live sound engineering during performances.
  • Work collaboratively with Drama and Dance teams on productions and large scale showcases.
  • Manage stage setup, microphones, monitors, cabling, and backstage technical requirements.
  • Support rehearsals and performances, including after school, evening, and occasional weekend events.

Instrument Maintenance & Workshop Expertise

  • Take lead responsibility for ongoing maintenance, servicing, and repair of musical instruments across both Primary and Secondary phases.
  • Carry out routine in house repairs including restringing guitars, replacing drumheads, basic brass and woodwind adjustments, percussion repairs, cable repairs, and electronic troubleshooting.
  • Diagnose faults in instruments and technical equipment promptly.
  • Maintain a safe, organised workshop space with appropriate tools, spare parts, and safety procedures.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Liaise with external technicians for piano tuning and complex repairs.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs and inventory records.

Equipment & Resource Management

  • Maintain, catalogue, and audit all music equipment, instruments, and digital resources.
  • Oversee safe storage, transportation, and setup of instruments and staging equipment.
  • Maintain recording studio facilities, ensuring hardware and software are fully operational.
  • Support departmental budget tracking related to technical resources, repairs, and replacement planning.
  • Contribute to long term equipment lifecycle planning.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all music and technical equipment complies with health and safety regulations.
  • Conduct routine safety checks on electrical, sound, and staging equipment.
  • Support risk assessments for concerts, productions, and performances.
  • Ensure safe manual handling and secure storage of large instruments and technical infrastructure.
  • Adhere strictly to safeguarding procedures during rehearsals, performances, and events.

Student Enrichment & Development

  • Support students in developing technical skills in sound engineering, music production, and stage management.
  • Assist with co curricular clubs such as recording club, production crew, or technical theatre groups.
  • Encourage student leadership within technical production teams.
  • Support external performances, competitions, and community events.

Knowledge & Qualifications

  • Relevant qualifications in Music Technology, Sound Engineering, Music Production, Instrument Technology, or related field.
  • Strong technical knowledge of live sound systems, PA equipment, microphones, and mixing desks.
  • Experience using digital audio workstations (DAWs).
  • Understanding of health and safety requirements within music and technical theatre environments.
  • Demonstrable practical instrument repair and maintenance skills.

Experience

  • Proven experience in live sound engineering and event technical support.
  • Experience maintaining and repairing musical instruments and technical equipment.
  • Experience managing equipment inventories and maintenance systems.
  • Experience working collaboratively within a team environment.
