Museum Conservation Manager

Documentation and research

• Coordinate scientific examination, materials analysis, imaging, testing, and technical research.
• Maintain condition reports, treatment documentation, images, test results, and research findings.
• Ensure conservation information is accurately recorded in collection-management and documentation systems.
• Conduct conservation audits, collection surveys, storage inspections, and risk assessments.

Management and planning

• Manage external conservators, specialist laboratories, consultants, suppliers, budgets, and conservation projects.
• Recruit, supervise, mentor, and develop conservators, technicians, interns, and support staff.
• Provide leadership reports covering condition, projects, environments, risks, budgets, incidents, and improvements.
• Contribute conservation expertise to acquisitions, deaccessions, collections moves, storage planning, and museum projects.

Ideal candidate

• Strong experience in museum conservation, cultural heritage preservation, preventive conservation, collections care, or conservation management.
• Strong knowledge of conservation principles, ethics, standards, and professional practices.
• Experience with collection assessment and treatment, exhibitions, loans, transportation, storage, and installation.
• Experience managing conservation laboratories, teams, consultants, vendors, budgets, and technical resources.
• Strong analytical, research, problem-solving, project-management, budgeting, and stakeholder-management skills.
• Knowledge of museum safety, emergency preparedness, disaster response, materials, deterioration, and preservation strategies.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Additional languages and international or cross-cultural experience are highly desirable.
