The Marketing Accounting Student will support SECURE’s Marketing Accounting team with recurring financial and production accounting activities, including accruals, variance analysis, reconciliations, settlements, invoicing, plant balancing, and system maintenance.

This role is based out of our Brookfield Office in downtown Calgary, Alberta .
The student will join a collaborative Marketing Accounting team responsible for supporting accurate and timely financial and production accounting activities across SECURE’s operations.
The team works within established monthly reporting and settlement cycles, creating an environment where collaboration, communication, organization, and attention to detail are important. The student will work closely with team members and receive hands-on coaching and mentorship as they develop their understanding of SECURE’s accounting processes and systems.
You'll work in a collaborative accounting environment alongside experienced Marketing Accounting and Production Accounting professionals, supporting monthly settlement processes, reconciliations, accruals, variance analysis, and financial reporting activities.
The role provides hands-on experience with accounting systems, operational and financial data, and industry-specific processes within the energy sector. Success in this environment requires strong attention to detail, organization, and the ability to prioritize work effectively while meeting recurring monthly deadlines and deliverables.
Support the preparation and maintenance of accrual models for SECURE Facilities.
Assist with financial and operational variance analysis and investigate differences as required.
Enter and maintain producer splits within the Egistix system.
Support the preparation and processing of counterparty invoices related to monthly settlement payments.
Assist with monthly settlement activities and ensure assigned deliverables are completed within established industry deadlines.
Complete reconciliations of trucking-related general ledger accounts, including crude and butane activity.
Support Production Accounting with plant balancing activities during the monthly accounting cycle.
Maintain and organize accounting-related communications and information within the team’s Microsoft Outlook system.
Run and maintain SSRS reports, including updating battery codes used for Petronex reporting.
Assist with the review and cleanup of UWI and battery information associated with truck ticketing in Egistix.
Identify and investigate discrepancies in accounting or operational information and escalate questions to appropriate team members.
Maintain accurate and organized supporting documentation for accounting activities and reconciliations.
Review and update training materials, process documentation, and other team resources.
Collaborate with team members to support coverage of critical accounting activities and deadlines.
Assist with accounting projects, process improvements, and ad hoc analysis as required.
As knowledge and experience develop, take greater ownership of assigned accounting activities under the guidance of experienced team members.
Currently enrolled in an Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, or related post-secondary program.
An interest in pursuing a career in accounting, finance, production accounting, or the energy and environmental services industry is considered an asset.
Foundational understanding of accounting and finance principles gained through post-secondary coursework.
Strong Microsoft Excel skills with an interest in developing more advanced spreadsheet and data analysis capabilities.
Previous exposure to accounting systems, financial reporting tools, or data management systems through coursework, employment, or previous co-op experience is considered an asset.
Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and completeness.
Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Comfortable working with numbers, financial information, and large volumes of data.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a willingness to investigate discrepancies and ask questions.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Demonstrated initiative, accountability, and willingness to learn.
Ability to work effectively within recurring monthly deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
Previous experience with Egistix, Petronex, SSRS, or similar accounting and reporting systems is considered an asset but is not required.
