Role overview

The University of Derby is seeking a Lecturer in Forensic Science for its Biomedical and Forensic Science subject area.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and postgraduate students, develop curriculum, support student learning, and contribute to research and enterprise.

Contract and salary

  • The role is permanent and full-time.
  • The salary is £38,784 to £46,049 per annum.
  • The job grade is HE Lecturer.

Workplace

  • The role is based onsite at Kedleston Road, Derby Campus.
  • The position may require travel between sites and occasional overseas travel for research or teaching.

Learning and teaching

  • Teach and facilitate learning across undergraduate, postgraduate, professional, and post-experience programmes.
  • Develop modules and programmes in compliance with university quality standards and regulations.
  • Set, mark, and moderate assessments and provide constructive student feedback.
  • Review delivery using innovative study modes, learning environments, and pedagogic practices.
  • Undertake module leader or programme leader responsibilities when required.

Research and scholarship

  • Conduct individual and collaborative research aligned with College priorities and contribute to the REF.
  • Publish in appropriate quality journals and present research at scholarly events.
  • Develop relationships with professional, research, and industrial organisations.
  • Contribute to bids for externally funded research projects.

Student and university support

  • Act as a personal tutor, mentor students, and provide pastoral care or referrals when appropriate.
  • Support marketing, student recruitment, admissions, timetabling, examinations, and attendance administration.
  • Contribute to cross-College and University working and follow university policies and procedures.

Essential qualifications and experience

  • A good honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline and subject-specific forensic science expertise are required.
  • A PhD, submitted PhD, equivalent professional achievement, or willingness to work towards the requirement is required.
  • Fellowship of the HEA or willingness to work towards it is required.
  • Experience or knowledge of higher education teaching, quality assurance, and programme validation is required.
  • Research or enterprise experience and evidence of active publishing or other relevant outputs are required.

Essential skills and attributes

  • Digital capability, strong written and oral communication, and the ability to explain complex ideas are required.
  • The candidate must be able to work independently and collaboratively, manage competing priorities, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Flexibility, innovation, creativity, professionalism, and commitment to student experience and continuous improvement are expected.

Desirable experience

  • Professional body membership and a postgraduate teaching qualification are desirable.
  • Experience in crime scene investigation or general and applied statistical approaches is particularly welcomed.
  • Module or programme leadership, assessment design, external funding, and industry-based applied research experience are desirable.
