About the Role
- As a Junior Software Developer (Android) at 7shifts, you'll ship real work to an app used by 1M+ workers across 55,000 restaurants.
- You'll report to our Senior Manager of Engineering, Mobile, and sit on a feature team with a product manager, designer, and frontend, backend, and mobile developers.
- Your closest working relationships will be with a Senior Android developer and the iOS developers on your team.
- Our mobile mission: bring mobile expertise where it's needed, when it's needed.
What you'll do
- Ship features, with support: work alongside senior mobile developers to turn product requirements into real Android features, from spec through release, building end to end ownership as you go
- Build strong fundamentals: write clean, tested Kotlin, build UI with Jetpack Compose, and learn the architecture and patterns that keep our app maintainable at scale
- Protect quality with our Support team: triage and resolve bugs, and help keep the app stable and performant for the people who rely on it every shift
- Manage competing priorities: balance your feature team's roadmap against injected work with hard deadlines, communicating early and leaning on your mobile team when target dates are at risk
- Grow through feedback: show up to code review, pairing, and 1:1s ready to learn, and act on the direct feedback you get
- Use AI deliberately: bring AI into your workflow to draft, explore, and iterate faster, while keeping ownership of what ships and always understanding the code you deliver
What you bring
- Fluency in Kotlin, and experience with the fundamentals of Android development: activities/fragments, lifecycle, layouts, and asynchronous patterns like coroutines
- Experience building UI with Jetpack Compose
- Experience working with RESTful APIs
- A foundational understanding of software principles, like SOLID
- Experience building an app with an architecture like MVVM
- You use AI to move faster, and you can explain what your code does, what you changed, and where you chose not to rely on it
- A learner's mindset: you ask good questions, seek out feedback, and iterate quickly instead of getting stuck
- Clear communication: you can explain your thinking, and you're comfortable asking for help when you're stuck
It’d be even cooler if you had
- A personal or published app on Google Play
- Experience with Java and/or Swift
- Exposure to Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) or unit/UI testing frameworks
- Coursework, projects, or interest in the restaurant, hospitality, or scheduling space
