- Oversee overall conference strategy, governance, and key decision making for useR!
- Work closely with organizers, partners, and sponsors to align activities with the mission and values of the R community
- Set priorities and budgets, review and approve major agreements
- Support program and operations leads, ensuring inclusivity, accessibility, and community engagement remain central
- Represent useR! in external meetings, nurture relationships with institutional partners and sponsors
- Provide guidance on long term sustainability, risk management, and financial stewardship
- Regularly review progress reports, help remove blockers, and foster a collaborative, respectful environment for volunteers and staff
Requirements
- Experience in leadership, governance, or ownership roles in conferences, nonprofits, or community driven organizations
- Strong skills in strategic planning, stakeholder management, and decision making
- Background or familiarity with the R ecosystem, data science, or related open source communities is highly beneficial
- Proven ability to manage budgets, contracts, and high level financial oversight
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including ability to work with international teams across time zones
- Commitment to inclusive, non discriminatory, and accessible event practices
- Comfort with hybrid work arrangements, including occasional travel and in person meetings in Dubai and conference related locations
- Relevant academic background or equivalent professional experience in management, organizational leadership, or related field

Company Description
- useR! is the flagship annual conference for the global R user and developer community, actively supported by the R Foundation.
- The 2026 edition will be held from July 6–9 in Warsaw, Poland, hosted at the University of Warsaw’s Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics.
- The event offers invited and contributed talks, tutorials, posters, and community led sessions that highlight innovation and collaboration across diverse R applications.
Role Description
- This is a part time hybrid Owner role based in Dubai, with flexibility for some work from home.
- The Owner oversees overall conference strategy, governance, and key decision making for useR!, working closely with organizers, partners, and sponsors to align activities with the mission and values of the R community.
- Day to day tasks include setting priorities and budgets, reviewing and approving major agreements, supporting program and operations leads, and ensuring that inclusivity, accessibility, and community engagement remain central to all conference initiatives.
- The role also involves representing useR! in external meetings, nurturing relationships with institutional partners and sponsors, and providing guidance on long term sustainability, risk management, and financial stewardship.
- The Owner regularly reviews progress reports, helps remove blockers, and fosters a collaborative, respectful environment for volunteers and staff.
Qualifications
- Experience in leadership, governance, or ownership roles in conferences, nonprofits, or community driven organizations.
- Strong skills in strategic planning, stakeholder management, and decision making, with the ability to balance community needs and organizational priorities.
- Background or familiarity with the R ecosystem, data science, or related open source communities is highly beneficial.
- Proven ability to manage budgets, contracts, and high level financial oversight in a transparent and accountable manner.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to work effectively with international teams across time zones.
- Commitment to inclusive, non discriminatory, and accessible event practices, with an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.
