Duties and Responsibilities
The Grounds Maintenance Laborer maintains assigned grounds such as buildings, camp and picnic grounds, parks, playgrounds, and athletic fields, and repairs structures and equipment, performing one or more of the following tasks:
Cut grass, using walking-type or riding mowers, zero-turn mowers (less than 2000 lbs.), includes the operation of electrically powered and gasoline-powered grounds equipment and machines, and the use of small hand and power tools or equipment also performs maintenance on equipment and tools, and makes minor repairs (within demonstrated capability) as directed.
Trim hedges and edges around walks, flowerbeds, and wells, using hedge trimmers, clippers and edging tools, prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth, using shears and other hand tools, sprays lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer or insecticide.
Plant grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs, water lawn and shrubs during dry periods, using hose or activating sprinkler system, picks up and burns or carts away leaves, paper or other litter; removing snow from walks, driveways, roads, or parking lots
Use shovel and snow blower, spreads salt on walkways and other areas, repair and paint fences, gates, benches, tables, guardrails, and outbuildings.
Assist in repair of roads, walks, buildings, and may clean comfort stations, offices workshop areas, and parking lots by sweeping, washing, mopping and polishing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.
1 year or more experience in this field.
Valid motor vehicle operator's license.
Valid GSA operator’s license.
Skill in the proper operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance tools, equipment, and machinery.
Ability to lift and carry grounds supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis, prolonged walking or standing, and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching on a daily basis.
Full range of physical motion in order to operate manual, electrically powered and/or gasoline-powered grounds equipment and machines.

Ability to access facilities and areas which may only be accessible by climbing stairs or by climbing ladders to a height of 20 feet (e.g., for tree trimming).
Able to move throughout assigned areas, as the work is performed primarily out-of-doors, year-round.
Knowledge of landscaping, minor repairs to facilities, and operating small equipment.
Perform other duties as required that may involve working overtime, weekends, flexible hours and holidays.
Perform work in conditions of inclement weather, extreme heat and cold, high/low humidity, blowing sand and dust, working in confined spaces and at heights while standing for long periods of time.
The ability to read English language sufficiently to understand written work orders and instructions.
