Job Purpose

  • The Design & Technology Technician (Resistant Materials) supports safe, effective and efficient delivery of practical learning within the D&T department.
  • Focus on Resistant Materials, Product Design and workshop based activities.
  • Provides practical, technical and organisational support to staff and students across Key Stage 3, GCSE and Post 16.

Workshop Preparation and Technical Support

  • Prepare workshops, machinery, tools, materials and resources for lessons and practical activities.
  • Prepare timber, plastics, metals and other materials for student projects.
  • Set out equipment, consumables and PPE required for lessons.
  • Organise, store and manage student work, project materials and departmental resources.
  • Support coursework, assessments, exhibitions and moderation activities.
  • Prepare CAD/CAM files and materials for laser cutting, CNC routing and 3D printing.
  • Support teachers and students during practical lessons and demonstrations.
  • Assist students with manufacturing processes, prototyping, modelling, testing and evaluation.
  • Reinforce safe working practices and workshop procedures.

Health, Safety and Compliance

  • Promote and maintain high standards of health, safety and safeguarding.
  • Ensure workshops, machinery and equipment are safe, organised and ready for use.
  • Support risk assessments, COSHH requirements and safety documentation.
  • Monitor student use of tools, machinery and equipment.
  • Report hazards, incidents, equipment faults and safeguarding concerns promptly.
  • Ensure compliance with school policies and recognised workshop safety standards.

Equipment Maintenance and Resource Management

  • Maintain workshop machinery, tools and specialist equipment in safe working order.
  • Carry out routine checks, cleaning and basic maintenance.
  • Record maintenance activities, servicing schedules and safety checks.
  • Liaise with external contractors regarding repairs and servicing.
  • Maintain inventories and stock records for tools, machinery and materials.
  • Monitor stock levels and support purchasing and procurement processes.
  • Receive, check and safely store deliveries.
  • Promote efficient use of materials and minimise waste.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, support staff and external providers.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Attend relevant professional development and training.
  • Keep up to date with developments in Design & Technology and workshop technologies.
  • Contribute positively to the department and wider school community.

Essential Person Specification

  • Experience working within a Design & Technology workshop, technical support role or related environment.
  • Good knowledge of workshop tools, machinery, materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience preparing materials and resources for practical learning activities.
  • Understanding health and safety requirements within workshop environments.
  • Strong organisational and stock management skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting student welfare.

Desirable

  • Experience within a school or educational setting.
  • Experience supporting GCSE Design & Technology or Post 16 Product Design courses.
  • Experience of CAD/CAM technologies, including laser cutting, CNC routing or 3D printing.
  • Experience of workshop machinery maintenance.
  • Experience of procurement, inventory management and supplier liaison.
  • Relevant technical qualifications or training.
