About the Department

Essential functions : Maintain order, discipline and security of the courts while they are in session assuring the safety and security of the courts and its participants.

Answer questions and interpret policy and procedures for judges, law enforcement officials, attorneys, and the public.

Position Duties
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Certified or previously certified City, County, or State Police law enforcement officers only. Retired officers preferred. In addition, applications will be evaluated on the following: Reasonable knowledge of the court system and familiarity with both walk-through and hand-held metal detectors. S kill in listening techniques and principles. Requires skill with a semi-automatic pistol. Ability to qualify with a semi-automatic pistol semi-annually; ability to communicate effectively both in written and oral forms; relate to and deal with aggressive or emotionally disturbed individuals; work independently; manage time efficiently; remain calm and use good judgment during confrontational or high pressure situations; make decisions independently in accordance with established policies and procedures and use initiative and judgment in completing tasks and responsibilities; utilize problem identification and resolution techniques; establish and maintain records, reports and statistical data; courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees, law enforcement officials, court personnel, attorneys, public agencies and the public.

Work is performed in a crowded/confined court environment which requires bending, color identification, climbing stairs, gripping hands & fingers, hearing alarms and voice conversation, occasionally lifting/carrying up to 14 pounds, reaching, sitting, standing, standing long periods and walking.
PHYSICAL EXAMINATION : Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment chemical detection screen.
To determine if physically qualified to perform the essential functions, employment offer is conditioned upon satisfactory results of a post-offer audiological exam; conducted at county expense.

Benefits
This position works on-call, as needed with no General County benefits.
Position not eligible for vacation accrual, ** sick leave accrual, holidays or any other General County benefit afforded to a position budgeted to work 20 hours or more per week. **See Douglas County Personnel Rule 9.3.1 Part-Time Employees Budgeted Less Than .50, and Temporary / On-Call Employees.
Part-time employees budgeted less than .50, and temporary employees, shall be front loaded up to a maximum of 40 hours of annual sick leave, that may be used for qualifying reasons as set forth in Oregon's Sick Leave Law as amended from time to time.
Front loaded sick leave may be pro-rated in the manner described in this rule ( see table listed in rule ).
Sick leave hours do not accrue or carry forward from one year to the next.
For the purpose of this provision of the sick leave rule, a "year" is the Fiscal Year from July 1 to June 30.
Once the Fiscal Year has started, newly hired part-time/on-call/temporary employees shall not be eligible to use sick leave until their 91st day of employment, unless otherwise required by law.
