About Us

  • The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) represents the State of Queensland in criminal cases.
  • The ODPP prosecutes criminal matters in the High Court of Australia, Court of Appeal (Qld), Supreme Court, Mental Health Court, District Court, Childrens Court of Queensland, and Magistrates Court (in limited locations and matters).

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing and maintaining systems for the inception of briefs of evidence, ensuring the prompt creation of both digital and hardcopy files, and facilitating the exchange of critical information with Victim Liaison Officers and Legal Officers.
  • Seeking instructions from legal practitioners regarding matters listed for mention or callover in the Magistrates, District, Supreme, and Children's Courts within the relevant region.
  • Representing the ODPP in court by appearing at mentions and callovers of prosecutions, providing updates on the progress of matters through the justice system, and completing sittings reports.
  • Preparing periodic reports and statistics on the work of the chamber, including summaries of matters considered.
  • Supervising and leading a team of Legal Support Officers by overseeing day to day legal administration services, monitoring attendance and timekeeping compliance, managing performance and development activities, and planning leave.
  • Coordinating administrative support for legal practitioners by allocating tasks to Legal Support Officers and ensuring the timely, efficient, and high quality preparation of criminal prosecutions.

What We're Looking For

  • Sound knowledge of the criminal justice system and the ability to quickly learn the Queensland context.
  • Strong oral communication skills, with confidence to present professionally in court and negotiate case listings.
  • Proven leadership skills, including experience supervising, coaching, and mentoring staff.
  • Resilience and flexibility to manage competing priorities in a busy legal environment.
  • Strong written communication skills for preparing reports and maintaining prosecution records.
  • High level proficiency in computer systems, including electronic document management and the Microsoft Office suite, with the ability to learn the ODPP Themis Digital Case Management Solution.
  • A commitment to professional and ethical standards, diversity, inclusion, and cultural capability.

  • This is a temporary flexible full time position for six months with the possibility of extension.
