A Consultant Psychiatrist is a senior medical specialist responsible for diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with complex mental health disorders.
The role combines clinical expertise, leadership, and decision-making to ensure high-quality psychiatric care, often overseeing multidisciplinary teams and contributing to service development.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, including medical and mental health assessments
- Diagnose a wide range of psychiatric disorders (e.g., schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders)
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, including pharmacological and therapeutic interventions
- Prescribe and manage psychiatric medications safely and effectively
- Provide specialist consultation for complex or high-risk cases
- Lead and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings
- Supervise junior doctors, residents, and other mental health professionals
- Manage psychiatric emergencies and provide crisis intervention
- Ensure compliance with clinical governance, ethical standards, and legal regulations
- Maintain accurate and confidential patient records
- Participate in audits, research, and continuous quality improvement initiatives
Qualifications & Requirements
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
- Completion of specialist training in psychiatry
- Board certification / fellowship
- Valid DHA medical license and specialist registration
- Extensive 3 years clinical experience in psychiatry
