Role overview
The Clerk of Works oversees construction activities, inspects workmanship and materials, monitors project progress, and verifies compliance with approved drawings, specifications, quality standards, and contractual requirements.
The role coordinates with project managers, resident engineers, consultants, contractors, and subcontractors to resolve site issues and maintain construction standards.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct regular and daily site inspections and monitor construction workmanship.
- Verify architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical works against approved drawings and specifications.
- Inspect materials, identify defects and non-conformities, and follow up on remedial works.
- Monitor progress, delays, deviations, technical risks, and contractor performance.
- Review technical documents and verify dimensions, levels, materials, installation methods, and completed works.
- Witness inspections and testing, maintain site records, and prepare progress and quality reports.
- Attend meetings, coordinate stakeholders, and report safety, quality, delay, and compliance issues.
- Maintain project files and support handover, testing and commissioning, valuation inspections, and final completion.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Clerk of Works, Inspector of Works, Site Supervisor, Site Inspector, Construction Inspector, or related construction professional.
- Hands-on experience in site inspection, supervision, quality control, and progress monitoring.
- Knowledge of construction methods, materials, workmanship standards, testing, and site practices.
- Ability to interpret architectural, civil and structural, mechanical and electrical drawings, shop drawings, specifications, and method statements.
- Experience with contractor monitoring, defect identification, reporting, documentation, and project record management.
- Strong attention to detail, observation, problem-solving, communication, coordination, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently at construction sites, manage multiple activities, and work extended hours when project schedules require.
- Knowledge of Malaysian regulations and authority requirements is advantageous; a relevant diploma or bachelor’s degree and construction, engineering, safety, or quality certifications are preferred.
