Summary: The Cement Mason Form Setter Trainee is an entry-level position designed to introduce the trade of concrete form setting through structured, hands-on training under the direct supervision of experienced Form Setters, Cement Masons, and Foremen. The Trainee assists with laying out, building, setting, and bracing concrete forms to correct line, grade, and dimension, and supports the broader concrete crew with material handling and site preparation, while developing the skills, safety habits, and trade knowledge needed to advance toward a full Form Setter or Cement Mason role.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Assist in laying out form lines using grade stakes, string lines, and basic survey/layout tools under supervision,
- Assist in building, setting, aligning, and bracing wood and metal concrete forms to specified lines, grades, and dimensions for sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, and roadways,
- Learn to use levels, transits, laser levels, and other layout equipment to check alignment, elevation, and square,
- Assist in installing form hardware, including stakes, ties, and braces, to ensure forms hold securely during concrete placement,
- Measure, mark, and cut form lumber and plywood to length using hand and power tools, including saws and drills,
- Assist in stripping, cleaning, and oiling forms after concrete has cured, and stack and store materials for reuse,
- Load, unload, and transport form materials, hardware, tools, and equipment to and from job sites,
- Assist the concrete crew with job site preparation, including setting up safety barricades, cones, and signage,
- Assist with basic concrete placement and finishing tasks,
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including proper storage and care of tools, hardware, and form materials,
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and job site safety protocols at all times,
- Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times on the job site,
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred; not required,
- No prior construction experience required — a strong willingness to learn is essential; prior carpentry, framing, or construction labor experience is a plus,
- Basic mechanical or carpentry aptitude, including comfort using hand and power tools, is a plus,
- Must be at least 18 years of age,
- Valid driver's license preferred,
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and work well as part of a crew,
- Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to various job sites within the service area,
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check,
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus but not required. Working Conditions:
- Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, and crouch for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50-90 pounds,
- Ability to climb ladders and work at various heights,
- Frequent use of hands and arms for gripping tools and handling materials,
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain and snow,
- Ability to work on uneven, unstable, or slippery ground and surfaces,
- Exposure to dust, noise, vibration, and other construction site conditions,
- This job requires the ability to see, whether naturally or with vision correction tools (e.g., glasses, contact lenses).
