Battery Test Systems Engineer

Joby Aviation is seeking a hands-on engineer with strong f undamentals to join our Battery Safety team as a Battery Test Systems Engineer.

As a ke y member of thi s high performing team, you will have a variety of responsi bilit ies .

You will prim arily own the design, integration, and data au t omat ion of c u s tom test equipment that will be used fo r both cer tification and the develop ment of current and nex t ge neration prop ulsi on bat teries.

Addition ally, you will s upport t he expansion of th e team’s tes ting labs to ensure continuous improvement and the developmen t of new ca pabili ties.

T his w ork wi ll be cruci al for making o ur batteries the safest in the industry.

• Design, build, and deploy custom electromechanical test equipment, integrating with high-voltage batteries and data acquisition (DAQ) hardware to support continuous battery safety development
• Develop, maintain , and execute battery safety and cell lab's expansion plans to cover continuous improvement and new R&D/certification needs
• Collaborate with data, cell, and battery safety teams to architect robust data pipelines and interactive dashboards, enabling real-time querying, automated reporting, and accelerated decision-making
• Maintain comprehensive hardware/software documentation and equipment compliance, ensuring battery safety lab operations continuously align with certification requirements and local municipal permitting standards (building, electrical, fire, and air)
• Execut e batter y and cell testing in support of battery s ystem development and certification
• Support certification efforts across all programs by developing and maintaining meticulous documentation of test equipment
• Minimum Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of experience OR Advacned degree and 3+ year of experience in mechanical engineering, thermals, physics, or related field
• Basic understanding of battery hazards and failure modes (e.g., thermal runaway, electrical shorts, mechanical abuse)
