Position Overview

  • The BDC Seed Venture Fund is an early stage venture capital fund investing in the next generation of built in Canada global leaders.
  • The fund works with companies across all seed stages, from inception, and collaborates deeply with early stage ecosystem stakeholders.
  • Thematic areas include industrials/agriculture, climate/sustainability, defense, and computing, but open to all emerging trends.
  • Post investment, the team works closely with portfolio companies to assist with go to market, hiring, fundraising, and Series A readiness.

Challenges to be Met

  • Identify new and interesting entrepreneurs and companies that align with our areas of interest.
  • Perform market research and due diligence for potential investments.
  • Report on our portfolio companies, including preparing semi annual updates.
  • Work with existing portfolio companies, including helping with go to market, product, hiring, financial modeling, and research.
  • Execute projects of your own creation that will help build our platform, improve our operations, or support our portfolio companies.

What We Are Looking For

  • Native understanding of the startup ecosystem and awareness of emerging technology trends.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Good fundamental business instincts – you see the full picture of a business and how all the functions work together.
  • Strong interpersonal skills – you’ll often be talking to entrepreneurs and other investors.
  • Ideally, prior design or engineering experience (either software or hardware) or work in an investment related position.

Typical Professional Background

  • 5 years of experience in a role involving critical thinking, product/engineering, financial analysis, and/or other technical expertise.
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, commerce, or economics. Philosophy and psychology also viable with demonstrated technical aptitude.
  • A post graduate degree or equivalent certification is valuable, including MBA, other STEM Master’s or PhD, CFA, CPA.
