Teaching Assistant Role

  • Teaching Assistant (Learning Support Assistant)
  • Special needs teaching assistants help children with a range of learning, physical or behavioural difficulties
  • May work in a special school that supports children with a range of moderate, severe or complex special educational needs
  • Job titles may include special needs classroom assistant, learning support assistant, support worker or special needs assistant

Requirements

  • Candidates must have an equivalency

Responsibilities

  • Help with school work alongside the teacher
  • Prepare learning materials, usually adapted from the teachers plans to suit the students
  • Encourage children to be confident and independent
  • Help children to understand instructions
  • Contribute to a child’s care plan (education, social, behaviour and personal)
  • Encourage children to communicate, sometimes using non verbal means of communication such as Makaton or PECs
  • Support children during social activities and outings
  • Help children during therapy sessions
  • Recognise when children are upset and comfort them
  • Look after children’s physical needs
  • Assist the classroom teacher with the preparation of lessons, materials, and the overall organization of the environment
  • Provide students with instruction under the supervision of the classroom teacher
