The Assistant Manager - Canada Payroll is responsible for managing end-to-end Canadian payroll operations, ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing, statutory compliance, reporting, reconciliations, and stakeholder management. The role requires strong knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, payroll systems, taxation, benefits administration, and process improvement initiatives.
Payroll Operations
Manage end-to-end payroll processing for Canadian employees on a weekly, bi-weekly
Review payroll inputs including new hires, terminations, salary changes, bonuses, expenses, and mileage.
Validate payroll calculations to ensure accuracy and compliance with company policies.
Ensure payroll deadlines and service level agreements (SLAs) are consistently achieved.
Perform payroll audits and quality checks before payroll submission.
Compliance & Statutory Reporting
Ensure compliance with Canadian federal and provincial payroll regulations.
Manage payroll-related statutory deductions, including: CPP (Canada Pension Plan) EI (Employment Insurance) Income Tax Provincial Taxes

Support year-end activities, including T4, T4A, RL-1, and other required tax reporting.
Coordinate with internal and external auditors for payroll audits and compliance reviews.
Reconciliations & Reporting
Perform payroll account reconciliations and balance sheet reviews.
Analyze payroll variances and investigate discrepancies.
Prepare payroll reports, management dashboards, and KPI reporting.
Support month-end and year-end financial close activities.
Maintain payroll documentation and audit trails.
Process Improvement
Identify opportunities to streamline payroll processes and improve controls.
Drive automation and continuous improvement initiatives.
Participate in payroll system implementation, testing, and enhancement projects.
Support transition activities and standardization of payroll processes.
Team Leadership
Guide and mentor payroll analysts and associates.
Review team deliverables to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Assist in workload planning, training, and performance management.
Promote a culture of accountability and continuous learning.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, or related field.
- 5 to 8 years of payroll experience, with at least 4 years in Canadian payroll operations.
- Experience managing payroll teams or leading payroll processes.
- Strong understanding of Canadian payroll legislation and taxation.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
- PCP (Payroll Compliance Practitioner) certification.
- Experience with payroll systems payworks.
- Knowledge of payroll accounting and financial reporting.
