This role spreads asphalt, gravel, and other materials, lifts and carries materials, tools, and supplies, cleans tools, equipment, and work sites, and may assist with traffic control and support other craft workers. The Asphalt (Heavy) Equipment Operator must be able to perform assigned duties in extreme weather conditions.
1. Heavy Equipment Operation - Operate heavy equipment such as asphalt pavers, asphalt screeds, asphalt rollers, base rollers, milling machines, ground milling machines, backhoes, and continuators, following established safety and operating procedures.
2. Tool & Equipment Operation - Operate hand and power tools, including shovels, lutes, surveying and measuring equipment, and other tools and instruments, as directed.
3. Material Handling & Spreading - Spread asphalt, gravel, and other materials as part of paving and construction operations.
4. Lifting & Carrying - Lift and carry materials, tools, and supplies required for job site operations.
5. Site & Equipment Cleanup - Clean tools, equipment, and materials, and clean up rubble, debris, and other waste from the work site.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works around moving traffic and near moving mechanical parts, and works in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to airborne particles and vibration, and is exposed to extreme weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

The employee stands or walks for up to 10 hours per shift, and frequently walks, climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls; bending or stooping is required for up to 30 minutes, crouching occasionally, carrying for up to 1 hour, and sitting for up to 30 minutes per shift. The employee frequently lifts and carries objects weighing 5-10 pounds continuously, 10-20 pounds for up to 10 hours, and 20-50 pounds for up to 4 hours per shift, with objects over 50 pounds lifted occasionally; the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Days and hours of work vary based on the project schedule, weather, and production needs, and may include early mornings, extended shifts, and nights and weekends, particularly during peak paving season.
This position requires minimal travel, other than between assigned job sites within the local service area.
