Application Engineer

The Application Engineer shall have the knowledge and abilities outlined in the core functions listed below. Although it’s not required to have at least 5+ years experience in each of the categories, the Application Engineer shall have a total of at least 5+ years related experience being an Application Engineer and the ability to advise Government personnel on streamlined processes and techniques for conducting the items listed under the core functions. Supervisory Responsibilities:

• None. Duties/Responsibilities:
• Develop and update procedures for IT tasks.
• Assist with architecture and implementation of cloud services and infrastructure to support changing mission requirements.
• Perform IT System Administration.
• Manage distributed deployment architecture, index clusters, and search head clusters for Splunk.
• Manage and develop custom source types and dashboards for Splunk.
• Manage SharePoint site.
• Administer Linux environments and Active Directory/DNS.
• Administer commercial and open-source applications such as MISP and Atlassian products.
• Manage routed network architecture, firewalls, and VPNs.
• Develop custom dashboards and visualizations in Splunk.
• Maintain computer system hardware including servers, desktops, laptops, routers, switches, and firewalls.
• Utilize and script against APIs for data integration and automation.
• Review and analyze security logs from firewalls, web servers, and cloud user accounts to identify anomalies and trends.
• Work with data structures and formats such as JSON, CSV, and Syslog.
• Configure, enrich, and manage data streams using tools such as Cribl, Kafka, FluentD, or NiFi.
• Deploy and maintain containerized applications using Docker.
• Support SIEM administration, query development, and dashboard creation in platforms such as Splunk or Elastic.
• Support ETL processes to enable data normalization, enrichment, and transformation.
• Perform data streaming and batch processing for operational visibility and analytics.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts effectively to diverse audiences, including engineers and executive leadership.
• Other ad hoc duties as required.

• Experience with threat intelligence platforms (e.g., MISP, OpenCTI).
• Familiarity with SIEM tools (e.g., Splunk, QRadar, Elastic).
• Understanding of malware analysis, reverse engineering, or memory forensics.
• Exposure to MITRE ATT&CK framework and threat modeling methodologies.
• Experience preparing tactical, operational, and strategic threat assessments.
• Strong writing and briefing skills for both technical and executive audiences.
• Ability to correlate data from multiple intelligence sources and identify actionable insights.
• Experience with network traffic analysis tools such as Zeek or Suricata.
• Familiarity with cloud environments such as AWS (S3, VPC, EC2) and Microsoft 365.
• Experience with automation tools such as Ansible.
• Knowledge of object storage (S3, Minio) and databases (Redis, MongoDB) is a plus. Experience (Required):
• 5+ years of Splunk development experience supporting data analytics
• Extensive Splunk administration experience, including managing distributed deployment architecture, index clusters, and search head clusters
• Extensive Splunk development experience creating dashboards, reports, and complex custom queries
• Ability to manage and develop custom sourcetypes and dashboards for Splunk
• Experience normalizing disparate data sets, integrating multiple data streams and feeds from networks and infrastructure services, into near real-time dashboards for use in analysis
• Experience creating and managing Splunk knowledge objects
• Experience with MISP
• Experience with Apache, Docker, Structure Query Language (SQL) Server
• Experience in Python, Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP), and JavaScript
• Experience with configuration and administration of cloud services and infrastructure
• Proficiency with Linux operating systems and network security technologies (Palo Alto, Fortigate, Cisco, Sophos, etc.)
• Familiarity with web servers (IIS, nginx, Apache) Physical Requirements: This position primarily involves prolonged periods of sitting and extensive use of a computer. The candidate must be able to:
• Remain seated and work at a computer for extended durations.
• Use a keyboard, mouse, and monitor effectively for long periods.
• Communicate clearly via video conferencing, phone, and email. Work Environment/ Location: The customer site will serve as the primary work location Travel Required: This position does not require regular travel. However, occasional travel may be requested to support company events, team meetings, or customer-related activities as needed. Any such trip will be communicated in advance and coordinated accordingly.
