Role Overview
The Applied Scientist will join a technical team building systems for global container terminal operations.
The role applies data science, operations research, simulation, and machine learning to operational and strategic decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design solutions for equipment efficiency, yard positioning, vessel sequencing, and vehicle routing.
- Contribute to system architecture and solution design as new terminal features are developed.
- Build real-time operational tools and strategic planning models.
- Translate physical and stochastic terminal operations into mathematical models.
- Explain models to non-technical operators and leadership and support production rollout.
- Monitor performance against terminal events and improve models for operational drift.
Core Foundation
- Typically 5+ years of industry experience delivering technical or optimization solutions, with exceptions possible for strong PhD or demonstrated ability.
- M.Sc. or PhD in a quantitative discipline such as operations research, industrial engineering, machine learning, statistics, mathematics, or computer science.
- Production-quality Python experience integrating analytical models into functional data-centric software.
- Ability to frame operational bottlenecks mathematically and select suitable analytical methods.
