Overview

We are looking for an Actuarial Data Scientist to help Fetch continue to have best-in-class pricing and profitability while also supporting growth of the business. You will leverage predictive analytics to improve the sophistication of our existing pricing models and build tools to monitor the performance of our rating plans over time.

In this highly visible role, you will be a member of a small, close-knit actuarial team and will need to be adaptable, wearing multiple hats in support of various actuarial pricing and financial forecasting initiatives. Time will be roughly evenly split between pricing, conversion, and retention modeling work and traditional actuarial pricing work. You will help evaluate product proposals from a pricing and enterprise risk management perspective, support rate filings and responses to regulatory objections, and contribute to special pricing projects such as increased limit factor analyses, policyholder coverage utilization studies, and pricing brand new coverages. You will frequently engage in creative problem-solving and present your findings to senior leadership, actively shaping the organization’s future. Location Remote (U.S.)

Primary Responsibilities

Price Elasticity & Lifetime Value: Develop price elasticity curves to forecast the impact of rating changes on policyholder retention and conversion, and assess their impact on customer lifetime value

Conversion and Retention Forecast: Forecast policyholder retention and conversion for the portfolio based on pricing, operational changes, and business initiatives

Risk Segmentation: Improve the risk segmentation sophistication of our rating plans by developing GLM-based rating factors (in R or Python) and applying advanced predictive modeling techniques

Performance Monitoring: Build and maintain tools to monitor the performance of our existing rating plans and rate level over time, including loss ratio, conversion rate, churn, and lifetime value

Data Analysis & Modeling: Write advanced SQL procedures to pull from large, line item level veterinary bill databases

Product & Coverage Analysis: Estimate the impact of coverage and product changes on pricing

Evaluate New Product Proposals: Analyze product design proposals to determine pricing viability, impact on enterprise risk, competitive positioning, and customer value

Market Analysis: Stay highly informed on competitor filings to understand how our products and pricing stand relative to the market

Rate Filings & Indications: Support rate filing and rate indication work, including the development of filings and responses to regulatory objections

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Operate seamlessly with product, underwriting, marketing, BI, and IT teams, and communicate complex actuarial concepts to a non-actuarial audience

Innovate: Propose creative ways to price innovative coverage concepts and ideas

Qualifications

  • ACAS designation required (or ASA working in health insurance)
  • At least 5 years of experience working in an actuarial or data science P&C and/or Health insurance role
  • At least 2 years of experience in an actuarial ratemaking and/or pricing modeling role
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL is required
  • Strong knowledge of R and/or Python is required
  • Intermediate knowledge of Excel is required
  • Advanced knowledge of generalized linear models (GLMs) is required
  • Intermediate knowledge of elastic net GLMs, k-means clustering, and geospatial statistics is desirable
  • The ability to review and evaluate data for quality, completeness, and reasonability is required
  • Experience performing competitor filing research in SERFF is a plus
  • Comfortable or willingness to learn how to work with AI assisted coding tools, such as, Claude, GitHub Copilot, or Gemini
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills; an excellent team player able to apply innovative ideas and critical thinking
  • Able to anticipate needs, innovate and flourish in a high-volume, fast paced environment
