Scope/Purpose of the Position
The Underwriting Team Lead is responsible for analysing the risk and compliance of residential mortgage loan applications within the scope of agency, private investor, and company guidelines. The Underwriting Team Lead is also responsible for minimizing the risk exposure of the organization by certifying applications are underwritten to the applicable parameters. This positions also oversees the training, coaching and assisting of Underwriters with their assigned duties and assisting the Underwriting Supervisor and Managing Director of Operations with projects as needed.
Team Support
First level point of contact for all credit escalations from sales, customers and other operational departments.
Assist underwriters and sales staff with questions as they relate to credit guidelines and credit related policies and procedures
Assist underwriters with review of transactions with red flags as they relate to credit eligibility by performing an additional review and/or additional research
Responsible to participate in management of designated email boxes for
the division which require management review (i.e. transferred appraisals, Data Verify clearance on certain items, referrals for declination from Account Management department)
Responsible to intermediate with QC findings for transactions selected for QC review including: Communicating findings to the responsible underwriter Review of corrected items Follow up with QC as it relates to resolution or disputes

Perform required second level review of files for transactions which require additional review per company policy
Perform required second level review of files for either new hires and/or underwriters trained on new product
Provide support to Closing/Funding departments as it relates to time sensitive issues which could impact a closing and/or funding
Provide support to Closing/Funding with review of funding conditions when business needs require (i.e at month end)
Holds others accountable to established performance levels to achieve individual and group goals and maintain consistent practices
Administrative
Participate in the training of new hires and the ongoing mentoring of existing staff at the direction of the Underwriting Supervisor and Managing Director of Operations
Make recommendations for process changes to the Underwriting Supervisor and Managing Director of Operations
Collaborate with Underwriting Supervisor and Managing Director of Operations on associate performance
Provide feedback on departmental training needs to Underwriting Supervisor and Managing Director of Operations
Perform random audits of transactions to ensure standards for completeness and accuracy are met at the direction of the Managing Director of Operations
Assist with the implementation and execution of strategic goals and objectives for the department that are aligned to corporate objectives and mission
Participate in projects at the direction of the Managing Director of Operations or Underwriting Supervisor
Perform other related duties as assigned by Underwriting Supervisor or Managing Director of Operations

Work Experience and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Prior experience in an Underwriting position analyzing conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, and/or non-QM transactions
- Prior experience in an Underwriting Team Lead role preferred but not required
- Strong current working knowledge of conventional, FHA, VA, USDA and Non-QM loan programs
- Excellent analytic skills, attention to detail, and ability to work within time constraints.
- Excellent level of oral and written communication skills; Ability to communicate across a variety of audiences.
- Intermediate level of computer skills and the ability to function in a windows environment utilizing Outlook, Word and Excel.
- Professional and effective interpersonal skills; Solid decision-making skills with display of professionalism in maintaining confidentiality. Ability to build strong relationships with internal business partners to achieve success.
- Ability to rapidly acquire detailed knowledge of departmental policies, practices and procedures.
- Strong time management skills, fast learner, self-motivated, and comfortable taking initiative and handling multiple projects simultaneously.
- Committed to taking responsibility and ownership for agreed actions and delivery.
- Reports to work on a daily and timely basis.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Five (5) years’ Underwriting experience required
- Prior experience in Team Lead role preferred but not required
- Direct Endorsement (DE) or Staff Appraisal Reviewer (SAR) Designation preferred but not required
