TITLE: Transportation Support Specialist
PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Transportation Support Specialist supports the daily operations of the Transportation Department by coordinating substitute bus drivers and substitute bus monitors to ensure uninterrupted student transportation services.
This position assists with operational readiness by conducting bus inspections, distributing required route documentation, and ensuring drivers have necessary supplies to safely transport students.
Licensing And Certification
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License required
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and Student (S) endorsements preferred or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.
Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Experience
- Experience in school transportation, logistics coordination, or related operational support preferred
- Experience working in a school district transportation environment preferred
- Experience communicating and coordinating with multiple staff members in a fast paced environment preferred
Essential Functions
- Coordinate and secure substitute bus drivers and substitute bus monitors when regular staff are absent to ensure transportation routes are covered.
- Maintain and update substitute driver and monitor availability lists.
- Communicate route coverage needs and assignments to transportation staff in a timely manner.
- Conduct random school bus inspections to ensure buses meet cleanliness, safety, and operational standards.
- Distribute TD29 route sheets and other required route documentation to bus drivers.
- Distribute cleaning supplies and operational materials to drivers as needed.
- Assist with daily transportation operations and provide support to drivers and transportation staff.
- Maintain accurate records related to route coverage, inspections, and supply distribution.
- Assist with resolving operational issues that arise during daily transportation service.
- Communicate effectively with transportation staff, school administrators, and office personnel.
- Support the Transportation Department in maintaining safe, efficient, and reliable student transportation services.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation or designee.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of school transportation operations and procedures preferred
- Ability to coordinate staffing needs quickly and efficiently
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with staff and administrators
- Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding personnel and operational matters
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and transportation management software
REPORTS TO: Transportation Director
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires sitting for extended periods while performing office tasks.
The work requires occasional standing, walking, bending, and lifting of supplies up to approximately 25 pounds.
The employee may be required to enter and exit school buses during inspections and supply distribution.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a transportation office environment and in school bus parking areas.
The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, vehicle traffic, and typical school transportation operational environments.
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
OSHA: This position may involve exposure to conditions requiring compliance with OSHA safety standards, including vehicle operations and maintenance environments.
